Astro A50 or Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro 250Ohm + Xonar Essence STX?

Which one should I buy? The price is about the same, maybe a bit cheaper if I go DT990 with STX.
I don't need a microphone as I already have Blue Snowball.

Oh and I will use it mostly for gaming (70%) and music (30%)

Are you talking about STX+a50 and STX+dt990?
If you are, I recommend STX+dt990. STX+A50 is plain wrong in so many levels.

STX + DT990

vs

A50.
I haven't used the Astro A50 before, but I have used the DT 990 Pros.

The DT 990s felt a little tight at first (clamp force), but I could bend the headband because they were metal. They felt great after that, except for the cable.

The only negative about these headphones is the cable. It's coiled, so it weighs one side of your head down (you can rest it on something to alleviate this). Also, mine appeared to wear out after a year or two because the left driver started going in and out.

The STX + 990s will be far better than the A50s for music.

I think they're better for gaming as well. It's just superior hardware for the price.

I see, thanks for the tips.

Last question though, how is surround in DT990? I wan't to hear where the enemy is coming from, that is my main concern.

I have decided to go with DT990, but ditch STX and go with Creative ZxR instead. I was planning to run both headphones and my 5.1 home cinema and I read that STX need an extra adapter. Also, ZxR is said to have better positioning in games, and that's quite important. Correct me if I'm wrong on the info though.

I have a pair of Astro A40's which is the same as the A50s just without wireless and I can say that their highest redeemable quality is their comfort level, Like pillows on my ears and I can wear them for hours without getting uncomfortable. However from what I have heard, the STX+DT990 will provide far superior sound quality in every application. If you are considering the A50's for gaming, don't. The so called "surround sound" is really just garbage. I have used a whole plethora of "gaming surround" headphones and nothing beats a good pair of stereo headphones.

If the built in mic is attractive to you, try getting a decent clip-on mic and attach it to the DT990's cable. With all this said, the A50's will still perform well for gaming, movies, and music. I've had my A40's for two years now and I've worn them every day. (no joke) I've had the opportunity to use them for everything and they are just well rounded. And if I were you I'd just get the A40's without the stupid mixamp. You can get a pair of them for like $150 without the mixamp I believe. I feel it necessary to mention the bass levels are naturally low with the A40s and A50s unless you have the volume turned up but then again that really comes with all "gaming" headphones. thumb.gif

Nice. Everything you said is quite correct. The STX only has stereo output, and there's no way to change that (the adapter is for the ST and STX II, which are different). The ZxR has 5.1 output, every analog output is amped and has a quality PCM179x series DAC, it has high quality capacitors all around, excellent input/ADC stage for improved recording quality, and pretty much everyone agrees that SBX Surround is better than Dolby Headphone (though I've never tested either personally).

The DT 990 Pro + ZxR will provide better surround/positional audio than gaming headsets, in addition to vastly superior sound quality.
