Yup. Everything is moving at a snail's pace. Modern CPUs are barely faster than Nehalem, and only slightly faster than Sandy Bridge (overclocked). Broadwell seems like it will also be only a marginal improvement as well, despite the new process.

Hard drives and ram have been stagnant in terms of storage/dollar for years. In fact, the value proposition has actually gotten worse if anything. On the bright side, mobile SOCs are advancing faster than Moore's Law, doubling in transistor count every year or so. Also, SSDs are quite affordable now, even for mass storage, and all with incredible performance.

From my research, modern CPUs are right around 100% faster than Nehalem.

Unless you are talking about workloads that take advantage of avx2, clock for clock, Haswell is 10-15% faster than Nehalem. It's not like max OC vs max OC haswell clocks much better either.

By Nehalem I was referring to Westmere not the 800 series. Westmere (aka Nehalem-C) being a revision of Nehalem on a better clocking node. Sorry for the confusion.

This seems to jive well with the rumors that NVIDIA will skip 20nm because cost saving only marginally less than 28nm.

At the same frequency, SB was 15-20% faster than Nehalem so Haswell is at least 30% faster than Nehalem. Not counting AVX. When Intel launched their D0 stepping, most 920s topped out at 4.2Ghz before frequency and heat scaling became more of a problem. Its pretty common to get 4.5ghz out of Haswell and even more from DC on air.

Theres a guy with a 5820k at 4.4Ghz on a Hyper 212 with temps <70*c.

I guess it really depends what you consider to be Nehalem. Westmere was 32nm whereas Nehalem/Clarksfield was 45nm. Are we comparing quad cores? Desktop CPUs? Extreme Editions?

In any case, Nehalem is 6 years old now, and even if modern CPUs are 100% faster, that's still a lot less than what many of us would have predicted at the time. If they had doubled in performance every two years then current CPUs would be 8 times faster.

No that's definitely not correct. Haswell is 10-15% better clock for clock over Sandy Bridge. It's 30-40% better clock for clock over Nehalem.

I was just thinking, it's pretty rare for Apple to not stagger their iPhone and iPad releases. Especially when you consider how big the A8X chip is (3 billion transistors?) and this being the first time they use TSMC, it seems like there isn't any capacity left for nvidia and AMD.
