I believe the 20nm node is only being tooled for low-power parts, it did not scale well to high frequency without the cost being prohibitive.... 28nm is more mature, they got better bang for the buck by re jigging their layout tools (software).

for amd is better a restrictive node with lower heat than a really hot gpu which would need many CLCs for a 500usd GPU
or at least long heatsinks with 2.5 slots

I know, but the reason anybody confuses the two ideas in the first place is that they used to be synonymous.

"Performance doubles every 18-24 months"

"Smaller nodes mean higher clock speeds"

"Power consumption on a given node is directly proportional to transistor count"

All of these things used to be true but aren't anymore. The question is, is it actually impossible to make faster chips the way we used to, or does the industry just not care about the desktop anymore, innovating in mobile instead?

Which has not been the case. For example look at GTX680 to GTX980. Not double performance thats that 30 months.

Ya, that's my point, things have slowed down a lot (in the past 3 years or so, not just now). nvidia used to be on a 6 month product cycle, now they just rename the same cards over and over again.

Edit: I hadn't realized that nvidia was off the 6-month cycle in the early 2000's. They called it "Moore's Law Cubed" in 2000.
