"Open With..." Browse not working correctly?

post #1 of 4

I'm trying to open an AVI file in VirtualDub, and the "Open With..." menu doesn't work right.
I had this working before with VirtualDub, so I know it's possible to do. Something's just wrong on my end and I don't know how to solve it.

Here's what I'm doing.

Step 1
Right click the AVI File (Recording.avi)

Step 2
Mouse-over Open With... and click Choose Program...

Step 3
In the new window, I look for VirtualDub. It's not in the list, so I click on Browse...

Step 4
I navigate to C:\Program Files\VirtualDub-1.9.11, select VirtualDub.exe and click Open.

At this point, I should be taken back to the window in step 3 with VirtualDub added to the list, but for some reason it doesn't get added to the programs list and I cannot open it with VirtualDub directly using this method. If I drag the file onto a VirtualDub shortcut, it works fine. If I open VirtualDub first then open the file through it's browser, it works fine.

I've gotten used to working with files in this way, so while I can still open the AVIs in VirtualDub using other methods, I still want to fix this one.

    That happens when the program is already in the Applications area in the registry, but under a different path then the one you browsed to.  The solution is to delete the invalid application entry from the registry.

    The applications area is in two places in the registry:
  • HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Classes -> Applications.
  • HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT -> Applications.

    In your case, since Virtual Dub isn't going into the Open With dialog, look for a registry key named "virtualdub.exe" in either of the locations listed above, delete it, and try the Open With dialog again.

I actually searched the registry for virtualdub and I missed this key under Classes/Applications.
I deleted a few keys for vdub and virtualdub before posting. Not thorough enough I guess.

Deleting VirtualDub.exe under Applications did the job.
Thank you, this has solved my problem.
