Budget upgrade to help someone out

Hi Guys,

My brother wants to get into a bit more PC gaming, and play some of the more demanding games I play such as ARMA III.

His old PC is running on an outdated 775 DDR2 platform, but he's just had a little one arrive and his wife isn't at work, so he doesn't have funds to splash out on a machine atm.

I'm going to see if I can help him out.

He's currently running 8GB DDR2 800, a Q6600 and my old BFG OCFU GTX 285.

He has bought a nice single rail EVGA PSU as his old one died, and some better DDR2 for cheap which should clock @ 1066.

His mobo is a gigabyte that should take Xeon's with a bios flash, and I have an E5450 spare, so I am planing on putting this one in, which should essentially take him from a Q6600 to a Q9650.

GPU wise I was thinking a nice little 750TI, which should be a nice boost over the GTX285 (DX9 - DX11 and around 2.5X the performance in games I would hope).

I've got a very similar setup in my spare hosting PC, it too is running a Xeon e5450, 8GB Ripjaw X and a low prof 750TI, and seems to run things very well, although this uses a 22" 1680x1050 monitor, so pushes a few hundred thousand pixels less than 1080, and his monitor is 1080.

Anyhow, with aprox £100 budget on a card, I wanted to know if you guys thought the 750TI would be the best option at this price point (looking at SH cards), or is there something else you feel may be a better option? Do you think the E5450 and 750TI will push 1080 at a reasonable detail level? As I mentioned my little machine I have pushes a lot of current games on high details, but that is a different resolution.

Cheers!

Unless you hate Radeons, go with R9 270 non-X, or R7 260X instead of 750Ti - cheaper and faster. And R9 270 non-X can easily and safely be OCed to 270X levels (it is the same exact chip, lower stock frequency).

I don't mind either, I tend to use all Nvidia in mine, but looking for the most bang for buck for my brother.

The 290 non X looks like a great choice for the money, seen some bargains on ebay, thanks for the hint smile.gif

Definately agree with this. There are heaps of deals to be had. Maybe a GTX 670 4GB model if you can find one at a good price.
