I7 870 Bottleneck question

Thread Starter
Hello there,
I currently have an I7 870 (which I have no intention of overclocking), and was considering buying a GTX 970. Will the i7 870 be adequate or will it significantly bottleneck the gpu? The maths seems to suggest that it will ok, but any advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance

It should be ok at 4ghz.in some games you will need better singlethread performance.which resolution do you use?

PontiacGTX the says it will not overclock, i would not get a 970 with that CPU you need at least like PontiacGTX said 4GHz CPU Speed. The card will work fine though you will just not get the most out of it..

But really depends on what he plays

I don't think the CPU will be much of a bottleneck for that system.

Honestly your biggest system bottlenecks would be a lack of USB3 and SATA3. CPU performance has plateaued over the last four years.

Penicilyn the op wants to know if the i7 870 at 2.93GHz will bottleneck the GTX970, i would say that it will

It will hold it back some at stock clocks, but it's still a good buy IMO. A future CPU / Motherboard upgrade will just make it more balanced. I would look into a small overclock if possible tho. You don't have to clock it to the moon, but a faster clock speed will make a considerable difference.

Hello,
thank you for the replies, I usually use a 1680x1050 (sometimes higher) resolution. Morever I mainly play rpgs such as Guild Wars 2, World of Warcraft and Diablo 3 etc. I would opt for the GTX 770 but the GTX 970 is the same price; so it seems to be the obvious choice. I currently use a GTX 570; would the GTX 970 offer both a tangible and noticeable difference over the GTX 570? I will buy a new Motherboard and Cpu in time, but the i7 870 has served me well so far. Again, thank you for the advice.

1680x1050 will be mfoe cpu bound than 1920x1080 in almost any game

On guild wars 2 could be fine

On warcraft would need oc

On diablo 3 could be fine

That generation really needs to be overclocked, it scales very well because the stock speed is so low.
