So how do you explain the massive disparity between the path of computer science and physical sciences in the graph? One continues to go up, and follows the trend in medicine and law (two other male-heavy fields prior to 1984) and the other one drops very low?

Wish there were more girl in computer science.. it would bring new idea.

I hear a lot of arguments making an assumption that NPR categorized women as computer science professionals as Peggy Olsens instead of Ada Lovelaces.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the other engineering fields aren't filled with secretaries and neither was this one.

I'm sure there is more to this then the "computers are toys for boys" idea.

They should examine how the psychology of women has changed in this same time frame as well. Both men and women's psychological state can be heavily influenced by societal changes. The world was a completely different place back in 1984. That's for sure.

Interesting.

I'm curious about the decline that started in 2004 and leveled out ~2008. That is a far steeper decline then 1984.

yeah why try to refute an argument (the field changed in scope) when you can simply dismiss it in a literary-sounding way. npr would love to hire you i bet

You mean the national science foundation since that is the source for the engineering numbers, npr is just reporting on it tongue.gif

Blame Hollywood?
What a load of crap this article is. Same garbage as every other far leftist article nowadays, which can only be summarized as, blame the white male for everyone else's inadequacies.

Men and women are not the same, similar, equal, whatever you want to call it, that's a communist fantasy. Someone please point me to the part in Darwin's Origin of Species where it mentions anything about natural selection creating equality. It pretty much says the exact opposite!

Women score better tham men in linguistics on average. They also usually speak twice as many words per day on average. I don't see anyone going around saying we need to discriminate against women to increase male's linguistics scores. Everything revolves around how can we screw over the white male because, holy crap, a male scored better in something on a bell curve.

Speaking of which, "The Bell Curve" already debunked all this far left trash years ago:
