Is my athlon 2 x4 640 my bottleneck?

Thread Starter
Hello all.

I just upgrade my GPU to a gigabyte r9 270 and I don't really see much improvement in games. I boosted some CS:GO settings, but it doesn't look any different. Same with BF3. Robocraft seems un-affected by the new card as well, which is odd because I thought of it as the least-graphic intensive game. Perhaps it's the lack of v-sync settings in the video options on the game, not sure.

My motherboard is an asus m4a88t-m. I have 4x2gb corsair xms3. I believe it's downclocked to 1333mhz by default.

It's been years since I even thought of "northbridge" and similar terms, so I'm not really sure on the motherboard or CPU being the bottleneck at all.

I've also heard about "core parking" recently. Does this mean I can utilize the CPU cores for games that only use one or 2 cores, and possibly get a huge performance boost?

Could I overclock my CPU/RAM safely and get a *noticeable* performance increase?

Should I just look for a new 125w am3 cpu instead and sell this one for $60?

BTW my cpu is a athlon 2 x4 640. My cpu cooler is a kingwin xt-1264 quad copper heat pipe (all pipes touch the cpu directly) so I should be ready for overclocking temps with it.

Your CPU has not enough power to sustain the GPU.

Sorry biggrin.gif

An R9 270 is pretty strong for an Athlon II X4 at 3 GHz. Anything you can do to boost the CPU performance will probably help the R9.

You can't go nuts trying to overclock on that motherboard and cooler, but you can probably wring a little more performance out of it. The chip is multiplier-locked, but you can increase the reference clock and OC it that way, taking care to keep the HT Link speed as close as possible to 2 GHz. Try bumping it up about 100 MHz at a time: 3.1 GHz is 207 ref clock, 3.2 GHz would be 213, 3.3 GHz 220, and 3.4 GHz 227. That's probably as far as you could get without needing more voltage, and without putting too much stress on the motherboard VRMs. But even an increase to 3.4 GHz should give you a noticeable difference in framerates.

That's exactly what he has already, a quad-core at 3 GHz. He could use a little more CPU performance, though.

That cpu is worse than my q8400 and my q8400 at 1360x7668 had 12-18% bottleneck and at 1920x1080 It had 5-9% bottleneck you need to oc that cpu to 4ghz or get a higher res

I went from a Q9450 straight to the X4 640 and BF4, WoW and Blender ran better. That said, OP should try O/C. A 70$ mobo like the 970A-DS3P will allow a decent overclock with the Athlon (3.6 should be achievable) and give him an upgrade path as well.

thats a downgrade it is not possible that the athlon could run better..

You are paying way too much attention to big reviewers. The athlon was noticeably faster, which is to be expected (3.2GHz vs 3.5Ghz and DDR2 800 vs DDR3 1866 is no small difference). As for the anandtech suite, it is irrelevant. We have a discussion on wow framerates in the vishera thread, you may wanna take a look.

gaming wise a is a downgrade.and my q8400 is almost the same or better than that athlon and had a big bottleneck
