[kotaku]The Kind of Video Game Violence That Disturbs Me - Page 9

Millions systematically slaughtered for arbitrary reasons in real life is different than thousands offended over the "deaths" of digital constructs with no feeling or emotion.

Let's just hypothetically say there's exists a school in this game where you're free to pop in and slaughter students. Will that not make it any less reprehensible? This could be loosely based on any of the school shootings that's happened in history but nope, just change a name here, change the setting up slightly and it's suddenly acceptable? The argument that's supporting this game all seems to boil down to "it's just a game" or " it's just pixels, no humans harmed during the making of this game"

I feel terribly guilty when my feet taps to the catchy tune "Pumped Up Kicks"

edit: have you noticed they tried to exclude animals and school children in GTA games? There's a very damn good reason.

Not sure who's more edgy, the game or the upset people not realizing it's a game, like other media it's fictional.

yeah, in the last thread there was a big comparison to GTA. i guess im a raging psychopath cause in GTA i tend to enjoy killing the civilians more than playing the story.

I think video games are pretty far away from being a serious mental health problem if the media counts. I'd say the nightly news is far worse frown.gif

that is you making those comparisons. when i play games, i dont try to compare the story in it to real life events.......especially in a WORK OF FICTION. why does it have to be based off anything? cant it be its own story? own character? its annoying that you guys compare it to columbine or any other mass shooting based off what you have seen in a gameplay trailer. if this was a book, would you care so much? its fiction guys.....

also, you should feel guilty, foster the people is a terrible band. imo of course. smile.gif

From a PR standpoint the game is a huge success.

All those who cry Outrage over fiction just bring more awareness to it. Human nature. I'm in the camp of I can tell the difference between reality and fiction, therefore am not "Disturbed" over it. that's the only thing I can control about it.

Many get peeved when people question their emotional maturity on one side that says you are getting all pansy over fiction? And to the opposite side about being desensitized to fictionalized depicted up close graphic Murder labeling those people as potential future serial killers.

Games are designed so you can tear away the veil of Reality and put yourself in the player/Avatars shoes and therein lies the rub in this game. Once you start playing and "Internalize" the play experience, your brain has to willingly suspend belief and engage your fight or flight at a light level...and I say that with a caveat.

Some have no control of this "Internalizing" once the game starts. they feel it Strongly. Ever walk to the edge of a high rise in a game and look over the edge and have your stomach tighten? We all have. Do it over and over and that stomach tightening will fade. We are all different in this regard.

And that's the point of discourse and discussion in this game.

Some of us can walk to the edge of the Grand Canyon look over the side of the cliff, sit down and have a smoke, dangling our legs over the side as this does not Internalize any bad "Feeling". Others are 20 feet away from the edge backing up saying "no way am I getting close to the edge" as they have made a decision that they do not want to Internalize that "Feeling" as they know themselves.

The developers have programmed "an edge of the cliff" about the most vile act a human can experience, and are daring you to walk up to it.

Nevermind what do I know. ooh "Look at me" you people.

Sorry about getting to the point of every game ever played or created. Once in a while truth skips out of my mouth.

I'm no fan of violent games, for the sake of being violent, but this still wasn't too bad in my views given that games are not a prelude to actual violence and that any kind of violence in real life is worse than the most violent acts depicted in film and games.

That being said, this is nothing more than a far-right supremacist propaganda tool in videogame form that's being masqueraded as vacuous art... There was a thread at Neogaf that exposed the developers and their motivation for making this was very suspect.

I got a question for everyone complaining this is to violent, is it coz hes killing "innocent" humans or is it coz its the actual violence?

That trailer and game is hardly violent, hell FC3 seems more violent then this thing

Doesn't look any more violent than what I see on TV. For example "The Walking Dead"
