Connecting subwoofer to the stereo system

Thread Starter
I currently have Technics SA EH-580 stereo system. It's pretty old, 13 years, and it does not have a subwoofer. Can I buy a subwoofer and connect it here? If so, then which subwoofer should I buy (I have a budget about 200 USD).? And how can I connect it?

On this system it is not configured for a dedicated subwoofer channel from what I can tell. You can hook it up to the LF side of the mains. This would probably sound pretty bad as the crossover would not be setup for a subwoofer. Also would probably be underpowered. Best bet would be to get a new receiver and speaker setup. I know that is not what you want to hear but the system is pretty limited in its capabilities. If money is an issue I found an older receiver that was 7.1 but did not have the newer hdmi inputs at a thrift store for $5. Was a nice Kenwood unit. Then just use the speakers you have and purchase a dedicated powered subwoofer. Or maybe you will get lucky and score one of those as well. Saw a complete home theater setup with speakers for $20 or so as well while I was there. Good luck on your searching.
