R9 295x2 Suddenly Overheating (74C in Arma III within 5 minutes)

Thread Starter
I installed the 14.9 driver set without uninstalling 14.4, which I believe caused the issue originally. When I would play games the temps were in the low 60s and I believe my system has good airflow. CPU is on a h105 closed loop and I have 3 SP 120s pulling air in through the front.

After this upgrade, temps hit 74 C in those same games within minutes, often just sitting on the load screen of Arma III.

I tried (1) driver uninstaller, but that caused an issue with my system time clock so last night (2) I bought a Samsung 840 Evo and reinstalled my whole windows and reinstalled the 14.4 driver which I know worked. I also reset my bios.

Since I feel I tried everything on the software side, maybe its a hardware issue. I'm going to take a can of compressed air to the radiator tonight but its new (June) I don't expect that to be the root cause.

Do you have any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your time, you guys are really helpful and selfless with your time on these forums.

Check the idle temperatures.are they the same?

Idle as in, like when I'm in excel or some non-gaming product - flat at about 36 C.

Then it hasnt changed from older idle temperature?

In all games you have that 15c extra?did you try 14.9.1?

Right, idle temps are the same as before - just the load temps jumped up.

I tried it on the last build but it didn't change anything. Now on this new build (fresh install of Windows 7 on a new SSD) I don't want to do multiple installs of the driver and make the same mistake I made last time.

Your ambient temperature remains the same?
It's possible that the new drivers activated the second GPU, are better optimized, changed a graphics setting in A3, turned off vsync ect. ect.
74c isn't all that hot for a dual card really.

I would run MSI Afterburner and use the RTSS to monitor the speed and usage - this might help hint at the reason. I'd also run a GPU benchmark to find the max temp, score and compare that with others.
My guess is that this is perfectly normal and the new drivers either changed some settings, activated the second GPU or are better optimized for performance. Take a look at post processing and what ao, ppaa, fsaa and bloom are set to. Post processing tends to heat up cards quickly - that along with vsync being off you'd easily have a 500-600w GPU heater.

Yup, got cooler even - fall has just set in here in the northeast.

That's a very interesting point, I'll check the vsync and the other items you suggested.

Both GPUs are up near 100% utilization, so I figured there were throttling.

I do use MSI Afterburner, what is RTSS?

Drivers: I installed 14.4 (slightly older driver from the beginning of the summer) when I did the clean install, and its giving me the same results that I saw on 14.7 and 14.9 on my old ssd.
