With adaptive you can just set the voltage at the higher level for the max multiplier, and it'll scale down from there. As the number of active cores increase multiplier and voltages drop accordingly, fully loading 1-2 cores at 1.40V or 4 cores at 1.25V will both put up reasonable temps in the 70s. Without adaptive you're either running way too hot at full load or sacrificing frequency headroom.

I usually use intel XTU and x265 encoding in conjuction to test it out. x265 is a really heavy but still real world AVX stress test, and XTU lets you monitor and change everything on the fly. You can control the number of cores x265 is using with task manager and setting CPU affinity, and then you can see how the voltage tracks as you load up more cores. You're probably need to set a ridiculous vcore like 1.475V and a large negative offset to get enough spread, but eventually you'll get to the point where you can't keep it stable at idle due to the negative offset, since it's not proportional. Normally your vcore drops to .7 at 800mhz or whatever, the offset pushes it down to .6 and it's just not enough even at that speed.
manual with cstaes scales back witout the risk of adding .1v under avx load.

I never suggest using adaptive over manual with cstates.

Set whatever vcore u need for your turbo per core oc and let cstates scale it back. Then you dont have to worry about .1v being added under fma3 or avx.

Manuel will add .020v over whats set max.

C-states are only going to help you scale back at below stock frequencies from what I've seen, not between turbo/OC steps. x265 uses AVX so that's already accounted for. If it's not stable using AVX...then it's not stable.

The mobo will handle the stepping between turbo frequency just the same. Adaptive is not needed.

Im not saying its worthless. Im just saying you have to be careful runnning adaptive and do not use synthetic benchmarks/stress tests. Unless you are running a low enough vcore not to mind the .1v that can get added at times.

But you do not need adaptive for avx stability either. All my cpus are a min of x264 stable. My server is prime28.5 24hours stable (4.1ghz). All are running manual with cstates.

Im using asus z87 mobos mostly and your motherboard might vary some on how it treats adaptive.

Maybe your mobo is different...whether C-states are on or off on my Asus z97 maximus VII hero, when you set the voltage to manual, it stays where you set it regardless of turbo frequency.

i have maximus hero VI, z87 plus and z87 A.


You do not have cstates enabled. You have them set to auto.

Also you have to use hwinfo64 or aisuite to see vcore drop. Most other apps show vid. Vid only drops on adaptive.

I have worked on z97 asus boards too.

You need to turn all cstates to enabled /c7 not auto.

Your vcore will drop on manual with cstates.

Maybe you have to change power settings in you control panel and set CPU power form 5% to 100% ?

that will make the frequency drop, yes.

You need to find the cstates area of bios and switch it from auto to enabled. Then about 6 more cstates appear. Set those to enabled too and the bottum 2 need to be set to c7.

I had them all manually enabled and monitored the vcore through hwinfo64 and I didn't notice any change in behavior while using adaptive mode...never tried it with manual though.

Not all motherboards drop the voltage with manual vcore and Cstates. My Asrock will drop the frequency but maintain the voltage.

I honestly don't see how C-states should play into this anyway. I'm talking about the voltage at load at various turbo/OC frequencies...C-states should only be relevant when the processor is idle.
