Need help deciding GTX 970 SLI or GTX 980 SLI - Page 2

imo either go gtx 970 SLI or just wait for big maxwell in a few months.  No point in buying 980 SLI since the performance difference wont mean its worth the extra cost.

Thats just my opinion.

agreed performance difference is not that big to merit the extra $200 unless you got cash to burn and from the comment that you made earlier about new psu and new motherboard I don't think you have money to just throw at the problem. I would just wait as stated

Thanks Yungbenny911 for the reviews, i think your review seriously shows me exactly what i feared, even the gtx 980 sli is not up to snuff for 4k. especially in the next 2 years.

Thanks everyone for the input, i think i will just save the cash and get gtx 970 sli and just plan to play 1080p / dsr x2 + AA for a while until 120hz 4k displays come out.
Doesn't appear big Maxwell is going to be enough to run 4K by itself.

980 SLI would be your best choice imo.

@soulwrath more the effort vs the money haha. and i just dont feel like dabbing into the issues with tri-sli not to mention the lack of scaling.

@mcg75 why bother with 980 sli then if the 970 sli can get 100+ fps @ 1080/1440 max settings.
hah regardless I say just wait and keep your 680s til next 3 months - 990 GTX, Titan X, the new Hawaii from AMD

I looked up your mobo prior to my previous post and saw it had 3 PCIe slots but did not read into the specs. However, I have been running tri-sli for 3ish years, starting with 680s, and have not found it to be any more problematic than 2-way sli. If you are dead set on 4k then I would say get 2 970s now, run 144+ fps on your current monitor, downsample if thats your thing, and wait for better 4k displays and better GPUs. You could also look at 2k in the interim. ROG Swift!

For 1080p a single 970 should be enough, heck 970 sli gives me average Fps of 150 on bf4 on max settings but no AA and this is at 1440p! But that being said I don't notice any difference between no AA and 4x AA.

OGSSAA or DSR can never look as good as the real deal, a native 4K monitor would still look much better than a Down-sampled 8K monitor. What you don't understand is that the GPU's in the next 1-3 years wouldn't be able to push games like Crysis 3, or Metro LL at 60 FPS x8 MSAA (or any other form or High AA), so you're basically going to be stuck with 1080p, or 1440p for the next 3 years if you wait.

Unless they produce a GPU that is 2.5 times the power of a single 980, and slap them in SLI, you would NEVER be able to run Crysis 3, or MetroLL @ 4K with SSAA x4, or MSAA x8 with only two GPU's, so if i were you, i would go ahead and get the 4K monitor and play around with settings. At such a high resolution, the games that require such high graphics processing power would still look pretty even if you turn off AA.

I'm not saying you should spend the extra cash on the 980's, but i'll tell you that i played with both of them, and FPS on paper only tells half of the story. 11 FPS increase may look silly on paper, but it can make or break the fluidity of a game's animation. If you used both GPU's like i did, you'll also end up keeping the 980's tongue.gif. The only time i can pick the 970's over the 980's would be if i was going Tri SLI.

Most likely yes.

Games are largely developed for what hardware is available. Bad development aside (environments, engines, etc) a game coming out in the next year or two is likely already in development and they are usually based around the performance of what is available.

With a few exceptions.
