Mineral Oil Bath

Thread Starter
Hey all, I know this isn't a "water cooling" subject but the specialized cooling threads were a tad too specific and far less people looking at it and I require some advice:

I already have the proper equipment to start the process (ie aquarium, radiator, mounts etc.) but just need suggestions and/or links to places to get good pumps and mineral oil. I'm looking at this to be a budget build (taking my old computer components after my upgrade and trying to overclock for a second computer) as an experiment. So if anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate the input. Overclock.net rocks. thumb.gif

Mineral oil isn't a great conductor of heat--far worse than water actually. I'm not sure what you have in mind when you say you'll be using radiators, but basically one thing to watch out for is that once the oil gets heat-saturated, it won't dispel very quickly so unless you plan to basically make a regular W/C loop just with the main components submerged in oil as well, I wouldn't advise overclocking. Even that 6870 may make more heat than can be passively dissipated.

Have you calculated the cost of oil yet? $15-20 per gallon x 20 gallon aquarium = $$$

This deters many people from taking the plunge.

I have a 5 gallon tank, I'm using an old cooling deck evaporator as a heatsink with 4 fans attached to it, I will pump the oil out of the aquarium and circulate through there. I need suggestions on pumps and a place to get good deals on mineral oil.

*Bump* Ok, since there is such an array of people with the unimpeded desire to comment I'll just ask if there are good budget pumps out there. I've looked out for Swiftech and Laing but their pumps are pushing $60 bucks. Are there refurbished places that people here have used or anything? biggrin.gif

Also commonly used : "baby-oil"
Just be prepared for the looks you're gonna get from the cashier & the highly pregnant mothers-to-be plodding about in the "everything-you-need-for-your-new-baby shop" when you buy a whole box holding 24 -48 bottles. smile.gif

as for pump, you could try the eheim 600/1000 (submersible) aquarium pump... not sure how it is going to hold up though
