my PC Hellstorm needs an upgrade

Thread Starter
After upgrading every year, every chance I got...I went silent for quite some time in upgrades. I just figured why not wait some number of years. So naturally I have not looked into the upgrade world for my PC since I bought my 7970 GPU. I want to be able to transition smoothly into the next generation of games coming out. I like being budget conscious, though considering I'm upgrading for gaming it's not my number one priority. To be honest, I'm not into one Genre of gaming so I don't tend to build around a specific type of game, I just enjoy amazing graphics and computing power. I'm not big into messing around with overclocking, though I have done some tuning in the past, but with the job I have I just would rather turn it on and play games.

One thing I do a lot is Flight Simulator. The platform I use is Lockheed Martin's Prepar3d which is Microsoft's older ESP platform for FSX. It's tough to build around this platform because it won't really take advantage of the latest and greatest although Lockheed is plowing ahead to make that a reality soon. I am looking to replace my CPU, Motherboard and RAM, considering the GPU is the newest piece on my rig. I'm an Intel guy and want to stick with them but with Sandy, Ivy, Haswell, Broadwell and eventually Skylake staring at me, I have no idea where to go.

If I could get some great recommendations on other peoples experience with the market, where things are at, where to go, whether to wait or buy, let me know! I really appreciate the assistance.

thanks everyone!

neither broadwell nor skylake are avaialble... and if you wait the best bet is going with x99 broadwell E/Hawell E or Skylake which uses ddr4

i wouldn't jump on the ddr4 bandwagon just yet. wait a year or 3 for the price to come down. doing ddr4 right now is just dumb with it's pricing right now.

i would definitely wait for broadwell. i read alot of promises with skylake, but that are just promises. broadwell is a die shrink so you KNOW you are getting real performance boost.

gpu wise, stick with the 7970 till TSMC can bring their 16nm FinFET online. then go for the die shrunk nvidia or ATI at that time.

+1 for waiting on one of the next releases.

Also +1 for waiting on gpu. Even at 1440p I do not see myself needing an upgrade just yet, and I have the 280x.
