I have a Saphire Tri-X 290X and want to go into water cooling, what kind of block do I need to get? A reference one? Is this a reference card? Very confused and couldn't find a lot online.

Tri-X is indeed a reference PCB

http://www.coolingconfigurator.com/ will help picking out what you need.

For performance between the different blocks, check this out:

For mine I used the EK block and backplate and replaced the thermal pads provided by EK with fujipoly thermal pads. My temps stay at or below 50 degrees C on everything on the board.

For more on Fujipoly pads check here:

Whatever brand you choose to use, you will want to get a good thermal paste (I used Gelid Extreme) for the GPU, and if you want optimal performance pick up some of the good Fujipoly pads for the VRM's

CREATOR: gd-jpeg v1.0 (using IJG JPEG v62), quality = 95

The yellow boxes are your VRM's you will want to put the Fujipoly on. Both front and back
