Risk is a potentially bad game. Benefits are a few useless trinkets. No matter how you slice it the benefits simply cannot outweigh the risks when it comes to pre-ordering. The bonuses are way too small and meaningless to risk wasting your money on a crappy, unfinished or even buggy product(see Alien Colonial Marines, BF4, Watch_Dogs). Now tell me if any of these games' bonuses made up for the shoddy launches they had. You shout ''you'' and pretend like I speak only for myself but we can use real life examples over and over again and you'll see that not once has a pre-order bonus made up for the game not living up to its expectations. If it happened, it is a rare and isolated case.

You can type up all the objective criticisms you want, but the truth is that people only do what they want to do, so the fact that the pre-order business is by all accounts growing would tend to show that people obviously DO get some benefit from it. Whether the benefit is perceived or real does not matter. They see some benefit to pre-ordering, they want to pre-order, and then they pre-order.
Or it shows that consumers are plain stupid and buy into hype and marketing trains rather than thorough research and information. What I hate with all these dolts who pre-order is that they don't realize it is a practice that hurts the consumers rather than help them. By continuing to support those shady tactics they encourage devs to keep going that route and keep shovelling promises with absolutely no guarantee they'll be able to deliver on them.

Back in the days of the N64 you had to pre-order OOT because cartridges being long and expensive to produce could quickly go out of stock. I had to wait a week until I got my hands on a copy of OOT. Today even COD and GTA don't run out of stock at my local stores. If these games don't empty their stocks then no game will which makes the sole benefits of pre-order lousy perks like a crappy gun for the first level or a pre-order outfit.

There's no justifying pre-order in this day and age.

Hmm.... what about beta/alpha testing? Pretty sure you can tell if you're going to like a game or not if you've gone through one of those first. Pre-ordering under those circumstances is completely acceptable to me. There's plenty of ways to get enough information on a game before it comes out, and waiting for reviews when you can test it yourself beforehand or you know research and then possibly get it at a lower price by pre-ordering does not at all sound like people are always idiots for doing it. I don't think I've once pre-order anything without either doing extensive research or by testing it before hand.

When there are actual pre-alphas and betas then there are incentives to pre-order. I seldom see huge AAA games giving early access. This seems to be restricted to some crowdfunded projects and some Steam games.

No, see, you didn't read what I wrote as I wrote it. You applied your pre-determined pre-order hate filter to it before you read it, and ignored/distorted what I said.

You are not trying to speak for yourself at all. You are making sweeping generalizations and saying that, beyond all doubt, pre-ordering is completely useless. Full stop.

It is not. If there was no benefit, people wouldn't do it. Who cares if it's a useless level 1 item that has no meaningful impact on the game? Who cares if it's nothing but a multiplayer character skin? Who cares if it's nothing but the excitement and anticipation of having a brand new freshly unlocked game waiting for you in your Steam library at 10AM PST?

You do not get to determine what is worthwhile to other people. You do not get to call them stupid for caring about things you don't. You do not get to blame an ENTIRE INDUSTRY'S failings on them.

If you choose to see no value in pre-ordering, good for you, continue to not pre-order. If you choose to try to share your viewpoint with other people without calling them stupid and trying to forcefully change their minds, then keep right on going. However, being belligerent and actively attacking and insulting people that DO see value in pre-ordering is nothing but a jerk move.

Who says I'm going to pre-order before reviews are out? And I don't have amazingly fast internet, so an overnight pre-load is always very, very appreciated. Since when is 60 dollars outrageous for a AAA game? No one is forcing anyone to pay an extra $30 for a combination of DLCs that will come out at a later date. Pre-order bonuses? It's business, plain and simple.

If you don't want to get it, and are already POSITIVE that everything is going to be horrible, don't get it. But don't try to make fans feel ashamed for going for what they have assessed and believe to be a feasible deal.

It's common practice for MMOs to have betas, and also open betas, but yes also pre-ordering bonuses. There will still be some that fall into the trap that have not played the game enough but preorder anyways because of those benefits, but there will also be those who feel its a strong game worth playing and paying for, and the preorder bonuses are only icing on the cake.

As for single player/ console games, there still should be enough footage/information to form an opinion of a game, and if it comes at a reduced cost for preordering it's less risky than waiting for reviews then buying at the full price and then playing and realizing you don't like the game. The point I'm trying to make is there's just as many stupid ways to buy a game after it releases than before. The overall idea of preorder isn't by itself broken, but that doesn't mean there won't be some that are a detriment to gaming.

I'm pretty sure what you're doing right now is more damaging to the people around you then what we've been saying, oh the irony. We've been using logical reasoning as well, I guess you aren't reading correctly? As for actual examples, it still doesn't make your argument any more correct than others'.
