Help me, I'm a "new" gamer

I recenty bought a new configuration (i5 4670k, MSI R9 290x Gaming, 8GB RAM) after having a 7 year old machine. So, I didn't do much gaming, I couldn't even play small indie games. Now that I have a new rig, I want to make things up with all the games that I couldn't play, therefore I need some recommendations. Believe it or not, I need the basics for the last 6-7 years of gaming industry. Anything you come up with, any game or gaming franchise that is a "must play", please tell me.

Skyrim, Civ5, PlanetSide2, Saints Row 3/4, and Robocraft. Two of those games are free to play. They are all different genres as well. Skyrim is an amazing game to get as the engine is easily mod-able. After maybe 250hours in, I finally started using mods. I'm at 400+ hours now, and probably another 600 before I stop playing it.
PlanetSide 2 is a game that someone here on OCN described: "It is what Battlefield wishes it was". Truly an amazing MMOFPS. (F2P)
Civilization 5 is a great turn based RTS (4X). However, you will need it's two expansions to get the best experience. There is someone on the forums who might be able to find a cheap price for all three parts for you. I'll try to track him down in a few.
Saints Row are hilarious crime sandbox games. I always preferred them over the GTA series as I saw GTA as a crime sim.
Robocraft is... well. It's free. It's described as World of Tanks + MineCraft.

EDIT: Found him! @Ramzinho, I hope you don't mind getting tagged

You can't go wrong with Valve/Source games. Check out Team Fortress 2. It's hard not to have fun in it, and it's free.

Everyone else has a really good list going already, but if you really want a good overview of what PC gaming is at its core, play GTA : San Andreas. Mod tools galore, you can do basically anything you can think of to the game, heck they even made a FREE MULTIPLAYER EXPANSION! its a well loved game for a reason, and worth the couple bucks it would be to play it.

Showing off at the very least a new car, an ENB effect (Filter to make the game look better, can be tuned for personal taste) and the multiplayer mod. everyone with a green name over their head is a real player.

As for PC exclusive must plays? Gmod tops that list. Started as a physics sandbox, now has a whole collection of really cool minigames too. Buy it in the pack with CounterStrike, its worth it.

As someone who used to play it seriously: I would suggest not getting Starcraft 2 unless you like being flamed for not knowing what to do. They're just as bad as the LoL community and balance - at best is debatable in that game as you will lose to things which probably shouldnt exist in the game which require very specific actions to beat that are totally disproportionate to the amount of effort to implement.

Overall its just not a fun game, though its exhilarating to win I will say that much.

If you want value: get SKyrim. Due to mods that game can and will last you a good 300+ hours as long as you like action rpgs with emphasis on the rpg side of things.

If you are into RTS games, there is Wargame: Red Dragon. The other two aren't super necessary as Red Dragon has everything the old ones did plus a ton more. It has a pretty in depth meta and steep learning curve but it is quite a fun game especially if you are a military hardware nut. There are also the Total War games if you like a mix of real time strategy battles and turn based campaign. The latest game in the Total War series started off quite roughly to say the least but it has improved considerably over the patches. There are also the older games like Shogun 2 and Empire. Although my personal favorites are the older games in the series like Rome and Medieval 2.

Some more great RTS games to consider are the Company of Heroes games which are quite visceral and intense. Same goes for the Dawn of War series which is by the same developer.

There is also Starcraft 2 if you are into really fast paced and competitive RTS.

Have you made an account on steam yet? I would start learning source engine games, try out Counter Strike Source first, get the Garry's Mod bundle. Left 4 dead 2 is a must have, play campaign BEFORE vs. mode though. I would also invest in Battlefield bad company, BF3 and BF4. I also recommend Metal of Honor for its awesome campaign.

As others mentioned, step one is to get a Steam account. After that, send me a PM here or add me on Steam.

I'll send you a free copy of Batman Arkham Origins, Counter Strike Source, Dirt3, as well as un-used legitimate CD keys for Assassins Creed 1, 2, Brotherhood and Revelations.

I have had all of these for months and I won't play them enough to enjoy them, and if you want to play them, they are yours.

note: I'm not sure if Assassins creed can be downloaded using only a key, that's for you to figure out (I have about 20 copies in CD-form that came with various graphics cards). EDIT: The Batman:AO key doesn't appear to be for Steam, it should be available for DL off the Nvidia site.

Singularity was pretty fun, short but good shooter mechanics and horror stuff and E-99 magic powers. But when it comes to shooters with some scary stuff and magic powers... Bioshock

My favorite games of the last years (most already mentioned):

-Path Of Exile
-Batman: Arkham Asylum/City
-Metro: 2033/Last Light (buy the 2033 redux version if you don't have original, for LL it doesn't matter much)
-World Of Tanks
-Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon (i bought this at 15€, bought Far Cry 3 at 5€ and i got more value out of blooddragon)
-Dishonored
-Dragon age: origins

Edit, for some reason i always forget strategy games:
-Tropico 4
-Banished
-Sins of a solar empire: rebellion
-Stardrive (this is quite buggy though check if they fixed this, is not worth full price if it's not)
-Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal (probably also playable on your old PC, graphics are crap but this game is super addictive in the beginning, you start playing and suddenly it's 8 hours later while it seems like you only played for an hour)
-Europa Universalis 4
