CPU Upgrade - Help?

Thread Starter
Hello all.

This is my first time trying to play with servers, so please go easy on me...

I'm upgrading two Intel Xeon 5502 to two Intel Xeon X5650 chips. Are these new chips compatible with my board - Super X8DTL-i?
Specs listed say 5500 and 5600 series: http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/QPI/5500/X8DTL-i.cfm

I appreciate any help! smile.gif

Should work just fine. 5650 would fall under 5600 series, Westmere. I would make sure your bios is updated to the latest just to be 100% sure but then you should be good.

Thank you - the issue is that when I swapped the CPUs (I tested with one 5502, it boots), tested with one X5650, doesn't boot and there is continuous beeping for which there doesn't seem to be any explanation for in docs :/

Both of the X5650s run once at a time can't get anything to show on screen - I bought them together, used, from eBay from a seller with 99.9% and 3219 feedback score).

Have to tried using your 5502 to update the bios? Make sure it's all the way up to date.

I will give this a try tomorrow after work and report back -- downloaded BIOS vR 2.1b

I have no idea which BIOS I'm running. Could outdated software really be the culprit?

It's possible. It's either that or the CPU's you bought are just DOA because the board clearly states it supports the 5600 Westmere series. You can open up CPU-Z to check what your current bios revision is.. and it should also be noted in the bios itself.

Well I'll be damned. Updated BIOS, CPUs biggrin.gifredface.gifthumb.giftongue.gif

Do you have any recommendations on a fan + heatsink? The small copper heatsink used for Xeon 5502 was probably just fine, but that used less power and ran slower. CPU temp warning beep came on while installing Ubuntu server rolleyes.gif

I was looking into this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Dynatron-G555-LGA1366-2U-Copper-Base-Aluminum-Fins-Heatpipe-FAN-Heatsink-/291240413298?pt=US_CPU_Fans_Heatsinks&hash=item43cf480872&autorefresh=true

Cool, glad it works.

Ehh, not sure about that heat sink. That just looks like a beefier version of the stock heat sink. I doubt it's worth $35 and the fan is probably loud. If you're gonna spend $35 just pick up a 212+ EVO.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099

Not sure if there is anything better at the $35 price point it's been awhile since I have kept up with all the coolers, but I do remember this one being good bang/buck.

Thanks - just ordered two of those.

By the way, I had errors installing Ubuntu server, so I'll go with something else.

When running regular Ubuntu on the 5502s, however, everything was slooooooooow. Why is that? I realize that there's no integrated graphics on the chips and
since it's a server there's no dedicated graphics cards, but how can I fix this in the future?
