[Gamespot] Indie First-Person Shooter Removed from Steam After Developer Threatens Gabe Newell - Page 10

Though I believe it could be due to a battle between Origin and Steam, it is still a fair point.

That's just a joke gone terribly wrong. At 20 you can do stupid stuff. Never death threat stupid perhaps but still we can all do stupid stuff. I did stupid stuff when I was 20 too.

This is an Indie developer and Steam would win even more hearts if they become the bigger man and just forgive the company.

To me it looked like a personal tweet, which has a huge bearing on how I would handle this situation.

This situation is starting to go from "he totally deserved it" to "why are you picking on the other guys who didn't make a total fool of themselves?". Justice has been served. Now they're beating a dying horse with metal rods. That's not cool or fair.

I feel like someone needs to say something about this situation: I'm a proponent for fairness and this is turning into what I'm going to coin as a invalidated hate spiral fueled by kneejerk reactions.

It was a personal tweet, but he was the main face of the company at the time.

I agree that banning the entire team/company may be a little harsh, but I am not surprised that it is happened.

People need to realize that their actions never only affect them alone. If you have family that depend on you or friends (such in this case) that you partner with, thinking about your next steps after getting upset is crucial.

Because they are CEO's of a AAA company, and to have gotten that far they know better then to make completely unprofessional comments like that - regardless of their reputation otherwise.

This guy has been nothing short of unprofessional and childish, though it's a shame to see his team suffer.

Is there a past example of something extreme like this? I'm sure the guy did not mean what he said, but it was still a death threat if you take it literally. I can't remember ever seeing something like this so I have no experience about what to imagine might happen.

I guess Gabe Newell could theoretically even ask lawyers to do something real after this instead of just not selling the game on Steam any more? So the guy actually got off lightly.

What's also weird is that the guy has a strange view about the world and (indie) game development and if Steam existing is good or bad for him. He made some pretty ungrateful remarks about that, while the past situation was pretty terrible in comparison. The market for self-developed games like this was a lot smaller in the past, and getting access to customers by yourself was close to impossible, so earning money as a tiny two-man "company" was never easier than today.

Even when he now has to try to sell the game by himself, without Steam helping, the situation is still a thousand times better than it was back then (I kind of don't believe that he really could sell his half of the company to the other guy and won't see any money from sales any more).

More then anything I just feel sorry for the rest of the dev team. Having a down right their company ruined like this due to one mans stupidity is got to suck big time.

The Business world is anything but "fair".

Is there even an "official channel"? Search the game and all you find is his twitter account.

It seems they also knew him to be quite immature, and let him be the face of the group anyways.

I didn't see a "Business" twitter account. Seriously though you need to know who you are working with. Don't make the guy with a short temper the face and voice of your team, they should've known better since they claim to know him very well.

To a certain extent I agree, however I draw the line at a personal tweet.

You don't fire Megan Fox's makeup artist for Megan Fox making inappropriate remarks towards Michael Bay. You fire Megan Fox.

What next? Your husband got caught stealing from work therefore you, as the wife get fired too?

This situation is starting to look bad for all parties involved. I am not impressed at all.

Yeah, that's why laws exist. Businesses tend to act exactly how Steam is acting right now over this. It's just as immature and childish as the guy who made the death threat.

Sometimes I wonder: am I the only person in the freaking world who sees that a business can conduct themselves like a business and have morals? They don't contradict each other unless you make them contradict each other, especially where the bottom line is a non-factor.

I'm hoping over the course of the next week this gets sorted out in favor of the rest of the devs. Otherwise my opinion of steam will plummet like Tesco's stock value. Bad PR is bad.

Poor move on this fella...

So im kind of curious..... for the folks who own this game and bought it with their $$.   Will it be yanked out of their librarys too like other games in the past?   That is the kind of crap that annoys ME with valve.

I fully agree with you. Me finding funny the whole situation(a guy screwing it then screwing it even more, hence the slow clapping hands) doesn't mean I don't find it a bit unfair.

I think that Mike Murderberk made a huge mistake voicing his concerns like that, even if it was just irony. He should have had more tact towards his distributor's CEO/God/Overlord. I also think that mistake will have huge repercussions towards his career, but I don't want those to be as HARD as are right now. A lesson, yes. Cutting his head off just when he's about to surface from the developer mud, at such a young age, is HARD.

And of course, I don't want his developer pals/company to be caught in the shrapnel rain. That is unjust at the very least.

But I can also understand how, after all the crap that has been going on the internet these past years, specially after Gamersgate Gabe Newell would react: reads that, doesn't know it's an ironic comment/doesn't care and thinks "Well, good sirs, SCREW YOU" mad.gifbiggrin.gif

You know, I can be the devil's advocate for either part. Internet is at its most toxic state right now, and anyhting done to out stupid individuals out of it, I welcome tongue.gif

That said, a PROPER apology, the old-school apology, would work miracles toward improving those guys situation.
