eSata cable bad?

So, I have a question for the gurus here. I have a 4 bay enclosure. I use it to run RAID10. It's the Vantec HX4R. Now...if one of the bays (in particular) keeps erroring out, Vantec tells me it could be a bad eSata cable, or anything to do with the esata cable, including dust on the connector, or even something like the cable simply not liking the port it's plugged in to.

Is Vantec telling the truth here? It seems a bit weird to me that it would be the one bay in the enclosure. Could it actually be the cable? I'm trying a different cable now (a 3ft one as opposed to the 6 footer I was using), the drive itself is fine and it's rebuilding...so we'll see. Otherwise my backup plan is:

It could possibly be the cable. I've had so many IDE cables just stop working it's unreal, and I actual just had a USB 3.0 cable all the sudden stop working after being stationary running an external for months on end.

So it may be something as simple as a bad cable.

It's certainly possible for the cable to be faulty, it's not common but it does happen. Here's hoping it'll all be fine smile.gif

A faulty cable would cause CRC errors or Command Timeouts. These are SMART errors and can be viewed with Crystal Disk Info for example.

Recently in another thread did you mention that in one of the bays it caused drives and their replacements to fail? If that is what your talking about here its the Vantec's fault, a bad SATA cable or eSATA cannot cause mechanical failure or drive failure, just the two errors mentioned above and those are largely harmless.

There could be a problem with the backplane on the Vantec and its causing poor power delivery to one of the bays. This can be a problem with server's backplanes aswell.

If I have misunderstood your question could you post the SMART data for the drive.

The only issue in the smart data is CRC errors....I'm thinking now...all this time it hasn't been the drives failing. Vantec is saying it may be the cable even though it's the same bay every time. They even mentioned the length of the cable as a possible issue (used a 6 foot esata cable). Ideally I'd like them to be right, lol.

If the only issue are CRC errors you should be fine, it depends how quickly they're racking up though, if they're happening alot it will cause performance issues. If its only one drive affected then there could be a problem with the backplane within the enclosure, it could be going bad, there could be interference with the SATA data trace on the pcb.

I can't find much on the enclosure but its just one cable from the enclosure to your computer for the 4 drive array?

Recommending a shorter eSATA cable really wouldn't be a solution, the cable should be changed if every drive is increasing CRC errors.

Well, we'll see what happens....it rebuilt fine. If it happens again I'll just bite the big weenie and order that 4 bay mediasonic enclosure I mentioned in the OP. Nothing but good experiences from Mediasonic enclosures:)
