Not booting with memory in slots 1 and/or 3

msi says to populate memory slots #2+#4 first. i had a single stick of 8 in #2 working fine. i put a stick of 4 in #4, the computer sees 12gb. good so far. then when i put another stick of 4 in either #1 or #3, the computer won't boot up at all. the hdd "ticks", but nothing on screen, no bios, just a power and occasional hdd light. here are the configurations i've tried so far (both 4g sticks test good interchangeably) :

previous:
1)
2) 8
3)
4)

current and working:
1)
2) 8
3)
4) 4

also works:
1)
2) 4
3)
4) 4

not working:
1)
2) 8
3) 4
4) 4

not working:
1) 4
2) 8
3)
4) 4

not working:
1)
2) 4
3) 8
4) 4

not working:
1) 8
2) 4
3)
4) 4

any ideas? not sure what to do here. mobo says up to 32g, memory is all the same brand/model

specs
-i7 4790k (non-OC'd)
-Crucial Ballistix 8Gb + 4Gb + 4Gb
-PNY GTX 770, 4Gb, 1.15GHz
-MSI Z97 PC Mate

ps- after searching around, i found i should probably get a speaker and listen for beeps. my current setup doesn't have one.

edit: sory if this is the wrong section, please move it/let me know if i need to move it if necessary

Hi friend as i can see all your ram sticks are working and the problem might be that the mobo only works with dual channel, when you put 3 sticks the 2 of them will work dual channel and the other 1 will work single channel so i think its a mobo issue.

thanks! i'm new-ish to pc builds, so not too familiar with dual/single channel stuff.

so (hypothetically) if i got another stick and populated all 4 slots, i would be good to go?
