Well, i forgot to mention, temps are not important to me at all - i just want to know if i can get a chip at 5.0ghz, and i'll work up from there. I'm also willing to do 1.55 Volts although i heard that's bad as well.

Yea i saw the picture, that was really cool, and i would consider doing that, except in something more like a thermos, add freeon (A/C Coolant) and some ice, and throw that in the bottom of my PC Case.

Just because temps are not important to you doesn't mean they aren't important to the process. You cannot just arbitrarily state that you want 5GHz and make it so, there's a process involved. You're at the mercy of the CPU, first of all. There are chips that won't do 5.0GHz regardless of the voltage you put into them.

My advice is to let us know what motherboard/PSU you have now, and what dollar figure you'd be willing to spend in order to get to that mythical 5GHz overclock.

Heat isn't fun for CPU's, granted they are designed to take it, but you run the risk of shortening the life span of it. Hey, while you're at it, would you mind testing super chilled ethanol in a cooling loop for me?

What mobo are you using? That's a lot of voltage for 4.1. I run my 965 at 4.0 ghz just because there isn't alot of return after 4.0 on my chip compared to the heat and power it requires to go higher...

As stated above, an fx 6300 is a great chip and you can toss it on a $50 Gigabyte board and hit 4.5 easily. I have an 8370e running 4.3 ghz on the same board and it's only a 4 +1 phase.(LOTS OF AIR COOLING....LOTS AND LOTS). Unfortunately, a decent 8+1 990fx mobo is going to set you back about $130 for a UD3 or a Sabretooth, but they are really good boards.

5 Ghz 24/7 is going to be a balance of $$$, testing ability, and silicon lottery luck...and water cooling.

You need to be able to cool it properly!

You can boot, and run at 5GHz idle on several chips, but you will need it to stay within the thermal limits, or within your thermal wall at a given clock speed.

By thermal wall, I mean the max speed a CPU will run at it's max temps.....

Every chip has a thermal wall and a hard wall (the max speed the chip will run stable regardless of temps and voltage)..... with basic water cooling (h60-h75, etc), you will most likely be hitting your thermal wall before your hard wall.
With a higher end water cooler (h100++), or custom loop( biggrin.gif ), you can get much closer to the hard wall, or at least find that thin line where a safe margin of voltage is used to achieve an impressive, and 100% stable overclock, within safe temp margins.

And it's not to say that some chips won't run stable at 5ghz with failry high temps, but then you can only wonder for how long, and how much inefficient volts did you have to throw to it to get there (pushing the temps even further)

If your entire purpose is to hit 5GHz, without any performance expectations or needs, then you may not have a just purpose?
The real goal I would think (unless you are JUST chasing clock speeds for fun), would be to find the best performing chip for the money,

Your 965 at 4.1GHz is going to crush any of the APU's AMD is selling, and any of the FX4 series.... and it gaming, you may not even see a difference when going to an FX6300 (especially if the FX is at less than 4.4GHz)

I would say the best AMD options would be to go with an i5 4690k. ROFL lachen.gif
It'll do 4.5-4.7 on average aio water kits. It will use less power, and won't mind 70c+ temps

Edit: Come on.... that's funny.....

Ct,
Can you post a firestrike with 6300 and GTX970? .... curious to see the physics score, and also to see how that GPU does.
What clocks you at for daily use, CPU and GPU??

BTW, it was a total joke...
As in, the best AMD "solution" is to buy an intel..... there, problem "solved" LMAO tongue.gif
