Apple released iOS 8.1 to the public today, but it delivered something else to developers too. As of February 1, 2015 Apple will require all App Store submissions to include 64-bit support and to be built with the iOS 8 SDK.

If you've got an older iPhone or iPad (anything with an Apple A5 or A6 chip in it) this announcement means nothing to you. Like their OS X counterparts, 64-bit iOS apps can be distributed as universal binaries that support both 32- and 64-bit processors. 9to5Mac also reports that existing 32-bit apps will remain in the App Store. Only developers submitting new apps or updates to existing apps will need to comply with the new rules. Apple is usually fairly aggressive about mandating use of its latest developer tools. It required developers to switch to Xcode 5 and comply with iOS 7's new design rules in February of 2014—for older devices, this is just business as usual.

Heads up to people owning older Apple devices.... After Feb 2015, your device may not be able to use newer or updated applications.

It's good that Apple has so much control of their platform that they can force 64-bit. However, they don't have to deal with such legacy baggage as Microsoft.



EDIT: It needs to just INCLUDE 64-bit... not has to be ONLY 64-bit.

People will whine and complain about this change. But honestly, it is for the better. At least they have the balls to push the industry instead of letting it sit on its collective laurels.

True, but they also only have 1GB of ram in the new iPhone. Why are they pushing software, but not hardware?

64-bit doesn't require more RAM to beneficial. Besides, they were the first to push 64-bit ARM into consumer electronics, a custom design at that

This is amazing.
How can we push sales of a new phone? Make it 64bit and ban 32bit apss from appstore.

We've been in a bit of a "funk" for quite a while with the whole 32bit to 64bit move. As long as we have to keep including 32bit libraries to run simultaneously with 64bit libraries then things will never change. And it actually requires more resources to use both 32 and 64bit together.

And Apple does push hardware where they feel it needs it ( 5k iMac, very high resolution screens all around except in phones. )

So there will be a noticeable performance increase on iOS devices just by making 64-bit a requirement? How does that effect older devices?

Instead of making it optional, it is now required. Big difference. If the producers did not want to make a 64 bit version, why do you think it will be better? For the most part, they just recompile it as a 64bit version anyways. Seems dumb to force it.
