Ethanol cooling loop

Thread Starter
Not sure if this has been posted before, I searched the title in the forum and zip.

Moving on, since alcohol doesn't freeze, you can super chill it. Put that super chilled alcohol in a cooling loop and insulate your pipes, you have a nice frosty system. But the huge concern is, some alcohols are corrosive ish, and I don't know how the ethanol is going to react with the copper in the water blocks.

Provided this works, can keep the system sealed to keep the evaporated ethanol from leaving the system, you don't even have to super chill it, I'm sure it would dissipate heat to the radiators pretty fast. Would it work?

Older cars have an issue with ethanol in that ethanol has solvent properties...also it likes to turn into water.
(The water part you may be able to avoid if it is truly "sealed".)
I wonder if this would be an issue with a closed loop.

Pure ethanol would not be a huge problem. Check out a Chemical resistance chart, ethanol plays nice with most metals and some plastics, but there are some plastics you will need to avoid - like Tygon for example.

Ethanol has a lower specific heat capacity than water (practically all liquids except ammonia* do). The specific heat capacity, SHC, is a measure of the amount of heat energy a substance can absorb for a given change in temperature. Because of this it will not be as efficient as water at transferring heat, however this can be negated by chilling the ethanol far enough below 0°C that the lower coolant temperature compensates for the lower SHC.

If you were going for a system that runs above and below freezing look at using a normal automotive anti-freeze instead. This has been done plenty of times before with (mostly) good results.

* Don't even think about making an ammonia cooling loop - it is some very nasty stuff.

Why not use a glycol solution? You should be able to chill it far past what water can do, and it will play nicely with the loop components. And its less flammable biggrin.gif

Flames make it go faster! And how well would ammonia outperform water? I mean, this is THEORETICAL ...right?

Ammonia would move the heat more effectively from the blocks, resulting in a lower component / coolant delta. The same is true in the radiators - you would be able to maintain a lower coolant / ambient delta. It also has a freezing point of -77°C. Ammonia is commonly used for space based cooling systems for these reasons - less material needed (therefore lighter) and good down to low temperatures.

However:
Quote:
EYE CONTACT: Exposure to Ammonia can cause moderate to severe eye irritation.
INGESTION: Ingestion is not a likely route of exposure for Ammonia.
INHALATION: Ammonia is severely irritating to nose, throat, and lungs. Symptoms may include
burning sensations, coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, headache and nausea. Overexposure
may also cause central nervous system effects including unconsciousness and convulsions. Upper
airway damage is more likely and can result in bronchospasm (closing of the airway). Vocal chords
are particularly vulnerable to corrosive effects of high concentrations. Lower airway damage may
result in fluid build up and hemorrhage. Death has occurred following a 5 minute exposure to 5000
ppm
SKIN CONTACT: Vapor contact may cause irritation and burns. Contact with liquid may cause
freezing of the tissue accompanied by corrosive caustic action and dehydration.

Oh yeah, and it is also flammable. Still want to play?

Glycol thickens and is hard on pumps.

Ive been running a roughly 60:40 ethanol distilled mix in my cold side loop for months. Tygon makes a chemical safe low permeable tubing (expensive though), res is PVC and sealed tight, block is delrin.

Not recommended to use acrylic or glued together reservoirs.

Good point, and I would assume it gets much thicker as the temps go down low. Could you run 2 pumps in parallel though to reduce the strain? Not sure if thats a thing
