Too low Uncore limit core OC?

Will too low an Uncore limit the max core OC?

For example, I'm quite surprised that given my 4690k can do 4.6Ghz stable @ 1.215v I can't seem to get 4.8Ghz stable even at 1.29v with the default 3.9Ghz Uncore.

I know every CPU has it's limits, and 4.6Ghz could be this ones' limit, but could, theoretically, increasing Uncore increase the chances of the core going higher?

It may help you main core overclock to lower it some go to 38x uncore.

Only time you want to increase uncore is if you need absolute computing efficiency then you want to keep it within 3x or less of core multi

Thanks, that makes sense. I'm now running at 4.2Ghz uncore.

I was just concerned that having the 2 frequencies too far apart (like 4.6 vs 3.9) may cause issues and they'd need to be closer together.

4.2Ghz uncore seems to be stable at 1.088v so I can probably go higher to be fair.

Note to people on MSI boards...My Gaming 5 mobo sets the ring voltage to 1.28v on "auto", which is ridiculously high!

Generally the opposite.

The uncore uses power and produces heat too, though far less than the cores. Clocking the uncore/SA past the point where you see notable performance increases is almost always a waste.

Yeah, I've read that 4.2Ghz is about the "sweet spot" and I did notice around a 1.5fps increase on x264, which was about 5% up from 3.9Ghz.

I'd be surprised if the gains scale well after that point. 1.088v seems pleasingly low too, so I'm happy.
