Hello Guys,

I want to try out the the m.2 SSD . I want to run my OS from it. But i was a bit confused about which one to get...(M /B M+B SATA based orPCIE based) . smile.gif .

Will this m.2 SSD work with my Maximus VII Formula? :

That seems like a pretty pointless M.2 SSD to me, it uses SATA instead of PCI-E. Why not get a normal SATA SSD? It would be the same thing only more flexible (you could install it into a system without an M.2 slot).

It would work in the Maximus VII Formula, that board has a 2x PCI-E M.2 slot that also supports SATA M.2.

"1 x M.2 Socket 3, , with M Key, type 2260 storage devices support (both SATA & PCIE mode)"

The Premier Pro SP900 M.2 is 2242, not 2260, but since that just means it is a bit shorter everything should be fine. smile.gif

You know, I cannot seem to find a PCIe m.2 2260 SSD, they are all 2280s. Would anything get in the way if the drive was 2 cm longer? tongue.gif

A Plextor m6e-m2-2280 is what I was thinking of.

Edit:
I do not believe the Plextor would fit in your board.

A Sandisk A110 256GB but I do not think they are for sale yet. biggrin.gif

Ouch, looking into it further all the Maximus VI boards only have 1x PCIe connected to the M.2 slot.

Normal SATA is 6 Gbps while 1x PCIe 2.0 is 4 Gbps.

I strongly recommend you get a nice standard SATA SSD with those boards.

Edit: hmm, you have the VII... I don't know anymore. redface.gif

Edit2: Yeah, nevermind LOL Go for the Plextor or A110 if you can find one. biggrin.gif

If you want performance, there's really only one option, the Samsung XP941. It's much faster than the SATA3 SSDs. The Plextor one is somewhat faster, but pales in comparison to the Samsung.

Just make sure that it fits your motherboard (I know Asus has done something odd with the M.2 SSDs) and that you can boot off of it (check BIOS updates and ask at the owners clubs).

To be honest, we're not at the stage where M.2 is going to be painless or easy yet. It isn't widespread enough yet that it is a key priority and there is a price premium. Your money might be better spent on something like a Samsung 850 Pro or a San Disk Extreme Pro.

The other issue is that in day to day usage, an M.2 is not going to be the leap that an HDD to SSD was unless you are doing something very write-intensive.

The XP941 is PCIE x4. The Maximus VII Formula only has x2.

So the rest of your post is even more relevant. In all honesty I would get a Samsung 850 Pro if I had that motherboard.

M.2 really isn't better at all unless it is at least PCIE x2 and even then you are right, a standard gamer probably wouldn't actually notice. I am waiting for the XP951, I hope it makes it out of OEM only too. smile.gif

I saw a video review of the board, and asus screwed up with thier m.2 slot. No m.2 ssd can fit atm until they use the smaller/shorter lenghths. I think ttl at OC3D did the video wherd he installed one and it couldnt fit, i also recall it was the xx80 sized one. This is the only turn off for me about purchasing the mobo.

Edit:
I checked that link out, and maybe it will fit, but like other have said, i would wait for a proper pci-E m.2 ssd. So you can reap the benefits of the speeds. Look for that video review, it explains the cons of that particular aspect of the board.

Thank You guys 4 all the reply's and advice. Gonna think about it. But with all thats been said .. I think I will just get a good SATA 600 SSD Samsung Pro , or maybe the ADATA XPG SX910.

Then maybe later when I can throw away some cash I will just buy a small m.2 drive.. just for some tests.
