OP wait till Q1 2015 and then make the purchase. Nvidia is likely to launch the GM200 Big Maxwell by late Q1 2015 as will AMD with the R9 390X. That should be the right time.

If you can wait, then wait, but if i was in your position, i wouldn't wait, because "Big Maxwell" would be expensive, and wouldn't have the same power as dual 970's. It's going to be the same as 770 SLI Vs 780ti, 660 SLI Vs 680, e.t.c... It's always been like that with Nvidia. Big Maxwell would be very similar in cost to dual 970's, but up to 45% slower depending on the game

I don't want to get into much detail monitors in this forum but I have heard good things about the LG 34um95. I was looking at the dell u2413 to have as my main work monitor due to its panel bit depth and may consider it over another u2412m (hope it doesn't effect the surround setup due to being a different panel bit. 8 bit vs 6 bit for the 2412)

I guess it's really not the far away the release of the new cards. I just seen pc case gear have the 780ti 3bg at $599 at the moment. Should one look at 384bit cards? Vs the 256 bit cards......or am I opening another can of worms here. The 970 g1 gaming cards 4gb are at $515, .......

So I guess to wait a couple of months won't really kill me to get something really good.

Will be interesting to see what the new cards will perform like or if it will still be better to SLI the 970 or 980's 4gb.

Hope there will be a decent jump in performance to merit the upgrade, otherwise it's just bonus as the 970, 980, and 780ti will drop further.

Talking to everyone as certainly helped clarify many things smile.gif

I didn't know that about the new maxwell cards. Why would you want to spend more on a slower card.? Never the less why it's more important to ask the question and get the correct advice from those that have been there an done it.
You making me scratch my brain... I feel like I'm standing in the middle if a see saw. Lol. Which side do I go. I don't want this to bit my backside In a year or so.

2x 290 crossfire or 2x 970GTX whichever has the best performance in your games.rigbt now the 290 is 259usd at newegg(pcs+) comes.with 3 free games but some few games would need 4gb or a bit more at 5670x1080.but i would hold for pirate islands in feb 2015 and compare with the 970/980s

Do you guys really see games hitting and going above the 4gb barrier on the high resolution outputs of 5760 x 1080 or 1200. Or even single display @ 1200 or 1400. The whole purpose of this is to enjoy the games at high resolution, appreciate the high res screen and game play

Sorry not to be rude...pirate islands? Can you please explain.

I was also very surprised to hear from Yunngbenny that the maxwell cards which I assume is the new architecture used in the gpu's is slower. How sad! My issue is I am not so tech minded like you guys, that's why I love this site. I have always read other people's views but never jumped in as I don't know much. At least you guys are upfront, and have the experience...on top of that you know what to look for that makes the product fit for the purpose. When you understand how the hardware works you are able to advice correctly...I hate when people say to me....na you'll be fine, at least here everyone is upfront, and there is no BS.

Thank you for mentioning newegg, I hope they do have an australian outlet...I will look at the 2x 290 also....

I think from what I gather so far, that a 4gb card in min for enjoying the high resolution gameplay.....

I need to educated myself a little on the GPU's themselves to make sure the one I get has the processing power to utilize the 4gb efficiently....thus why the sli is an advantage as it enhance the usage of the 4gb VRAM. I understand when you guys say...what's the use of having the 4gb if your card can not push the info quick enough. I did read something about 4gb in sli is more effective as you increase the GPU's ability to move data quicker, which results in better performance/utilization of the 4gb.

384 bit an advantage here....Or 256 bit cards stilll the way to go?

on multi screens yes few games like titanfall,crysis3,cod ghost,middle-earth shadow of mordor,battlefield4,far cry 3 ,skyrim with mods, maybe some more games with maxed graphics

Single screens lower than 3840x2160 in res i dont think can reach >4Gb

Amd pirate islands is the reply from amd to nvidia maxwell,it could use a 20/16nm process and stacked dram which is minimum 45%+ better than gddr5 in the same gpu.giving way more bandwdith than the usual gddr5 single lawyer

I would check pcpartpicker from australia there are some listed stores from australia.i saw that used 290s go by 350aud on ebay.

If you want future proof at 5670x1080 or 3840x2160 or higher minimim get 4gb if you use all the graphics to the max with AA

For more AA/graphics quality that you need the higher memory bandwdith will be better for the games

Thank you for explains pirate island. That is a significant upgrade...starting to make allot of sense. I guess with the larger screens coming down in price and also the whole thing about 4k high resolution gaming is slowly forming and manufactures are starting to produce cards for that.... Wonder what the pricing structure would be like on these new cards!
Yungbenny would probably be right in saying there would be a decent price tag on them when launched...... Though a 45%+ increase is something worth thinking about, especially when the processing power becomes more efficient with the larger amounts of ram. Thank you for that insight, the new architecture seems to be a decent move forward.
