Upgrade for under £100! - Mobo, RAM, CPU - can it be done?

Hi guys!

So I think I need an upgrade desperately, and unfortunately I'm going to have to do a full core system upgrade meaning new RAM, motherboard and processor.

Ideally I don't want to spend more than £100. My aim is to not bottleneck my new R9 280 and to be able to run adobe Illustrator and Photoshop with ease.

Overlooking to a moderate degree but nothing crazy...

Second hand is fine!

Thanks in advance!

Great work guys, thanks a lot!

Also, that PC Part Picker website is pretty cool - I don't recall ever seeing it before.

I think I am going to go for (and with much thanks for your help)

Gigabyte GA-970A-DS3P ATX AM3+
Kingston Fury White Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-1866
AMD Phenom II X4 960T Black Edition

With the extra RAM it's a little over-budget but I think I'd feel much better with 8GB, especially for large graphic design projects for print.

I know this is the AMD section but given how your looking at second hand, then possibly Used LGA 1366 Xeons?

Intel Xeon X5550: £14, eBay - from here you could go up to a better one, still should be a good upgrade from a Q6600.
Intel LGA1366 Mobo: ~£50, there are a lot on eBay
Memory: Kingston Fury Series 4GB (1 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory (£29.64 @ CCL Computers) - borrowing that from pontiac.

Total ~$94, would you still need to buy a cpu cooler?

Grab that 960T,won't find a better chip for your budget. Biostar has a decent 970 motherboard you can grab pretty cheaply http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=748
or the Gigabyte UD3P.
The 960T is only a 95w chip,so it will work fine on any mobo, but unlocking to an X6 will bring it up to 140w (if it unlocks). 960T's will overclock to 4.0GHz very easily. thumb.gif

Interesting idea indeed. Why are they so cheap, they seem to perform well when compared to the Phenom II X4 960T.

I'll require a new cooler. The one I have sucks. Thermaltake Golden Orb 2.
