4gb - 6gb - 8gb next gen vram dilemma - Page 2

Get either a r9 290 pcs+/vapor x/tri x or the cheapest r9 290x with non reference cooling or a 970GTX.whichever can be cheaper by 40usd+(the 290x=970GTX) but the amd will come.with 3free games and supports mantle

SLI doesn't increase VRAM.

But yeah, you're probably not going to need more than 4 gigs of VRAM for a long time.

If you feel like being "forced" to turn supersampling off, or maybe reduce AA from 16x to 8x on a badly optimized game, you're gonna have to go for two high-end cards with a minimum of 6 gigs of VRAM anyways. You'll be fine with 4, as long as you're on a single 1080p monitor smile.gif

Bingo.

You can't predict which games will be optimized and which games will not be. Even on Shadow of Mordar it doesn't use more than 3 gigs at ultra on 1080p as of what I have read. Most insane VRAM requirements are either highly exaggerated or aimed at people playing on higher resolutions. 4 gigs in theory should last you a decent amount of time.

Which is why I suggested waiting for an 8gb version. No matter.

4gb is enough for 1920x1200/2560x1440/2560x1600 for now

Didn't notice, sorry about that smile.gif

But I stand by my opinion that 4Gb is enough for a long time, since newer games´ graphics sadly gets adjusted to consoles´ performance, which pretty much means that games won't progress graphics wise for many years (until the next-gen consoles).

At least that's what I've experienced smile.gif

I will either buy a 970 or the 8gb 290x , I won't go amd right now if I don't have a good reason (8gb) because 970 is a better choice , also i like physix.
Buying the 970 will be the cheaper option and i can sli later if vram is enough , if not I will have to lower settings and upgrade later on.
Buying the sapphire 290x 8gb means i won't run out of vram but I can't crossfire (they're hard to find at reasonable price and power hungry) and i lose physix.

As i've already said i don't feel bad lowering AA or not using supersampling but i definetely fell bad if I have to lower textures on a 2000€ pc.

There is no need of 8gb for that resolution unless you do eyefinity..and cheaper card is almost the same as any of the named
post #19 of 44
Go with a 290x 4gb or 970 depending on which is cheaper. The 8gb 290x is not worth it IMO. That card will lose it's power before it uses 8 gigs.

There's no doubt about the 290x running out of power before that amount of vram but will the opposite question stand for the 970 ? will it run out of vram before it runs out of power?
Nvidia has always been stingy about vram , especially going sli with stock memory , 280/480/580/680 and now 780 sli runned out of vram before power it's basically a given that 970 sli will do too and the same stands for single card , a 580 has the power of a 660ti more or less but the 1,5 gb of vram holds it back instead of the 2gb of the 660 , nvidia needs to sell cards and the best way to make them obsolete is vram.
The fact that you can't play a game on a card beacause of vram requirements is sad , the fact about 8gb vram should be seen as "I don't need to worry on vram" not "the card should be capable of running a game using all 8gb of vram"
