Macbook freezing

Hi all,

I own an early 2013 15 inch retina macbook pro that has recently started giving me some problems. The laptop has started freezing with increasing regularity. Started off around a month ago, where it happened once a week or so and now it's freezing every day. It happens randomly whether or not I'm using it intensively or just lightly. Doesn't appear to be caused by any particular apps. During a crash the computer's screen stays on but is completely unresponsive. You cannot use the mouse or keyboard. Has to be hard rebooted.

I finally decided to run the apple hardware test & it did indeed come up with an error: 4hdd/11/4000000: SATA (0,0) which is an error with the ssd.

Anyway, I could took this to an apple "genius", but would rather fix it more quickly myself. I have ordered a new drive:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Transcend-JetDrive-Macbook-Retina-Display/dp/B00LJO86NY?psc=1?SubscriptionId=AKIAJ7T5BOVUVRD2EFYQ&tag=camelproducts-21&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B00LJO86NY

and used the problem as an excuse to upgrade to 500gb.

Just want to check with some more knowledgeable people that I'm doing the correct thing & that with the new drive I should be good to go.

Thanks!

Do you have any kernel panic logs?

I have a few for when something like preview or adobe have crashed, but looking in the diagnostic reports folder (that's where the logs are, right?) there seems to be no logs of when I know the laptop has completely crashed and everything has been unresponsive. Any ideas? I'll be installing a new drive tomorrow to see if that resolves the error code on the hardware test. I'd be slightly surprised if it is the SSD failing though, I mean it's not exactly an old machine (18 months).

AHT is more than likely still going to throw an error because it usually hates non-Apple shipped parts. Open "Console" in the Utilities folder and look in the System Diagnostic Reports drop down. I don't know how you plan on cloning the SSD but most ways will not copy the part where AHT is stored. I wouldn't be surprised if the issue was your logic board. I've had to repair a lot of Retinas with the 650m due to all sorts of issues like you're describing.

Run that and see if it crashes right away.

Okay thanks, I've got about a dozen or so listings in there. What am I looking for?

Got none with panic in the title, it's mostly powerstats or webcontent stuff. What does having no panic logs mean? I'll run the heaven benchmark now & report back.

Those crashes are normal, I see them on everything, including my machine. No panic logs just means it's harder to diagnose wink.gif

Haha, I suspected as much! Just ran the heaven benchmark & no crashes. It ran like crap compared to my desktop, but it got through it fine. What would you recommend as a plan of action? Replace SSD, run AHT again if I can (was going to clone with carbon copy cloner), & monitor for further crashes? If it still crashes I'll return the SSD to amazon & maybe take it to apple to diagnose. If it's a logic board issue I'd be comfortable replacing it myself but I'm willing to bet the cost of one comes fairly close to the cost of the laptop? I'm praying it's just an SSD fault.
