4x4 Supersampling at 1080p - What would be required?

1920x1080 with 4x4 Supersampling renders the scene at 7680x4320 before scaling it down. This is quite a high resolution, and far too much for my current card to handle.

Would a GTX 980 be capable of running games at that resolution with a decent framerate (60+), or would SLI/Crossfire be required to meet this demand?
I'm not too interested in "Ultra" settings, since I prefer a clean looking image. DoF, Motion Blur, Post-Processing, Foliage, Shadows, Bloom and SSAO are all things I like to disable by choice, so I guess I plan to be running games at what others would consider medium settings.

Any information from people who either have SLI setups or high end single cards would be helpful.

Going to depend heavily on the game.

I would not expect a single GTX 980 to be sufficient for what you ask with the majority of recent, demanding titles, even at medium settings.

Remember this is four times the number of pixels as UHD; I'd don't think I'd purchase any existent hardware if this resolution was my goal. I would probably wait for big Maxwell, and get two of them.

Well most of the time the GPU load scales quite linearly so essentially you need 16 times more power for 7680x4320 then you would for bog standard 1080p.

For most modern games with any higher detail level this is simply un reachable. 3840x2160 is much more obtainable as its only 4 times the load of 1080p. For that an single GTX 980 is capable in some games but other heavier games will need two or even three 980 to maintain good FPS and level of detail.

I haven't really experienced linear performance scaling with higher resolutions but I know there is a big impact. It seems like it's a curve, and not quite as bad as it is in theory.
In my testing, it appears that with the games I play instead of requiring 16x the power it's closer to 10x for 4x4 Supersampling.

If not one, then how do you think two would work out?

The GTX 550 Ti ran at 13.6 FPS with 4x4 SS enabled, so I was thinking with slightly more than 4x the power (980 vs 550 Ti, based on benchmarks) it could get close to 60, and surely it seems like two cards could do it but I don't know, I've got zero experience with multi GPU setups and how they perform with higher resolutions.

After reading a bit it looks like high resolutions require large amounts of Memory Bandwidth more than anything, and the GTX 980 looks like it unfortunately has less of that than the 780 Ti or 290/290x does. With just the desire to increase Supersampling performance, would it be a better choice to go with the 780 Ti or R9 over the 970/980?

I have a pair of 290's, even at 2x2 SSAA in most titles im around 30FPS.

I usually just leave things at 1x because I want that 120hfps at 1440P for my QNIX.
