I have 3 X 6 b thubans that I've had running 4.5 ghz plus, they are nice but they aren't nearly as quick as what my 8 core Vishera's are for my daily mix of gaming ,surfing, chatting etc.

The best of the x6's is a 960T that I had running 4.6 Ghz on a 480mm loop for benching etc, A few days went by and I restarted the rig at those clocks without realizing it, after about 2 hours of screwin around , gaming etc, I checked where it was at. Whoops, checked temps etc they were fine. I'm sure it wouldn't prime at that speed nor would I even try but it was perfectly stable for what I was doing.
All that on an MSI FX790 GD-70.smile.gif

2 of those X6's are in a box collecting dust, the other is in my HTPC. The 3770k /7870 rig? I let my nephew have it for lan parties - I much prefer the 8 core Vishera's. It gave great bench numbers, very similar to my 5ghz capable 2600k but frustrated the beans out of me for daily use - sluggish by comparison to the Vishera's I have.

As for how things stand now Vishera vs Devil's canyon, I have no personal experience with the newest Intel's. But that will change in a week or so because I got a very cheap deal on an MSI Mpower motherboard and ordered a 4790K to top it with. I have no doubt's about how most benchmark comparisons will go , but unless it provides a better daily experience than my Ivy's or Sandy's have - it will be a merry Christmas for whomever I give it to.

Oh, I am sure it is both. biggrin.gif The one thing it taught me is that although I like all computer hardware, literally all, I am going to use what I want and what is best for me and what I am doing. Heck, I use a Surface 2, not pro, that fully replaces a laptop for what I am using it for and I use it in a professional environment. Lots of folks would tell me I am clueless or something along those lines, myself, *shrug* it works and very well so who cares what they think. biggrin.gif

What kind of cooling to get the 4.5Ghz on the thuban?
I'm not scared of running 1.6vcore, but I'm hitting my thermal wall doing it...

58c at 1.6v 4.2GHz after two hours of prime....
Runs everything perfect but gets too hot!

Another part of the problem is, I can get the core on up there, but thuban wants NB just as bad as core clock, and to get the NB in the 2.8-3GHz range, I have to send 1.3-1.4v NB VID on top of the vcore..... thuban hates heat...

Some chips will run stable at a given frequency within a range of temps, but the thuban seems to literally have 20-50MHz of core to give for every 3-5 degrees cooler you can get it!

Koolance 380A, 3/4 inch tubing , 480mm koolance 30fpi radiator and I think it was on a 5gpm pump. I don't recall the volts on the accidental 4.6 but the temps were fine( on the chip- don't remember how the board's were). That chip will validate at 4.6ghz as an x6 on 1.424 volts on a motherboard without LLC - it's a dandy.

Damn sure is!

I'd go for some more extensive cooling, but I don't think it's worth the performance gain I'd get from overclocking a few hundred MHz, versus that money going towards a 4790k... which to me is the best value of CPU + reasonably priced board right now....

The very best value on a CPU is the 5820k, but a good x99 board is too expensive....

I got a guy trying to give me $160 for my CPU and mobo right now towards a trade on a 4770k and z97x-ud3 mobo. He will take my chip/mobo and $220..... seems like a decent deal, but I can't help but remind myself that the only way I'm gonna get more FPS in Crysis 3 is by added a bigger PSU and another 7970/280x, which I could obtain for the same price.... oh the woes of brokeness.... 2cents.gifrolleyes.gif

Sure you need a good board, but same goes for a 8350. And far from all will make 4.7/4.8GHz stable on air.

With good cooling, all PhenomII/Thuban do at least 4GHz in the 1.5v range.

If you can't reach it, there is either something wrong with your setting, or the board is not juicy enough, or a cooling issue...

Was just pulling numbers from HWbot. I'm sure there are plenty of outliers, but still.
