Hello. Sorry, i'm not sure if this is the right place to post this. And i also can't get clear enough answers after searching. I have a Samsung 840 Series 128GB SSD and a 1.5TB HDD. I'm running out of space. I can't decide if i should buy another larger SSD or HDD. But my main concern here is I have a Windows 7 OEM and if I get the SSD and try to do a clean reinstall would i need a new activation code or will my old one work? Thanks!
It depends how much storage you need and what you need it for. I don't mean to be vague but your asking quite an open ended question, really its whats right for you so I can just give you some guidelines.
If you need a large amount of storage and its just for games, music, movies etc then buy a larger hdd. This will be the majority of cases.
If you need faster storage for something such as VMs, photoshop and video editing then another or larger SSD. This will then be the minority of cases.
While SSD prices per/GB have fallen and are continuing to do so (~256GB capacity is now typically the best value) its still far cheaper to buy a large HDD, while these are in orders of magnitude slower than a SSD; for typical usage they will be fine. For HDDs the best value drives are the 3TB capacity.
If you haven't worked it out by now I'm really swinging towards a larger HDD as I think that would be best for you. For a 3TB I like the Toshiba DT01ACA300, usually it can be found for $100.
Also if you where considering it, don't bother with the WD Black line, they're really expensive and whether its worth it is questionable. The 3TB is $180 on NewEgg, while it is marginally faster and carries a 5 year warranty; while impressive and WD do offer a very good warranty service it doesn't make much sense to buy the drive. I don't know whether I'm overly optimistic or just plainly delusional but if the Toshiba does fail out of its rather pathetic 2 year warranty you might be able to pick up another 3TB drive with the price difference between the Toshiba and the Black. Back on Earth I would also say its not very likely for 3TB to hit $80 or $90 within the next 2 to 3 years, but might be something worth considering.
If you think a larger SSD is for you and I'm leaving this here for you then at 256GB the OCZ Arc $107; for value SSDs at the moment its a toss up between the Arc, Sandisk Ultra II or Crucial MX100. In the near future (before Christmas) the 850 Evo should hit the shelves and that could shake up pricing. 512GB, MX100 $215 or 1TB Ultra II $400.
Movies and large files means you should get a new HDD.
The SSD running out of space means that you should get a new SSD. Move all files (like movies and music) off the SSD and onto the HDD.
I'd recommend the MX100 as a good value SSD, as all of the other cheap ones seem to be TLC or lower quality NAND.
Thanks for the replies. I've decided to get a 3TB HDD. I might another ssd if needed but i think hdd was the best way to go. Thanks ^_^
