[SOLVED] [UPDATE 23/01/2015] Samson Meteor Mic not being recognized by Windows

Thread Starter
I've been using this mic for about three months now and it has worked really well. Today I noticed that instead of the blue color LED it has always shown, it's now showing amber color. I also cannot find the device under my audio device options in Windows and the device is recognized only as an unknown USB device when previously it was recognized as Samson Meteor Mic in device manager. Also, when I plug in the mic, a notification pops up and says it is installing drivers for the found device and after saying installation succesful, it posts another notification saying that one of the USB devices is malfunctioned and cannot be recognized by Windows correctly. Tried the mic on my brother's PC with the same results. The mic was working only two days ago just fine and nicely. Really off putting if a mic this expensive just craps itself by sitting on my desk and doing nothing.

Has anyone else had similar experiences with this mic or could someone know how to go about and try to fix it or if the mic itself is broken suddenly.

Probably worth mentioning, recently upgraded motherboard and cpu. But it has already worked with this new configuration.

EDIT: *SOLVED*

I contacted the store and they asked me to send it in for a look. They had it for a week at their mainteneance department and then they sent it back to me. They didn't specify the problem, but I am suspecting it had something to do with the USB port on the microphone. Now it works like it used to, but I already bought myself Audio-Technica AT2020 USB microphone while I waited for the Meteor Mic. I'm just gonna sell the Meteor Mic now.

*UPDATE JANUARY 2015*

As of now, the microphone has been sent back to the retailer and I have asked to get my money back. I sold the microphone to someone after it was returned to me from their warranty service. Before Christmas I got a message from the person I sold it to saying he has faced the same problem I had with it. There seems to be some sort of flaw with this microphone, most likely something suggested by the helpful people in this thread.

If you come here through Google etc, my only advice and solution is to return it and either get your money back or get it changed to some other microphone.

I suggest everyone to stay clear from the Samson Meteor Mic. It has a major flaw which cannot be fixed by the user, since it doesn't even use drivers. I have since switched over to Audio-Technica AT2020 USB microphone, which works in similar way of not using drivers. So far this microphone has worked perfectly and doesn't have such conflict between it's hardware and Windows.

BUY THE SAMSON METEOR MIC AT YOUR OWN RISK

I've seen a few cases where Windows 7 is problematic in general for this microphone....

I can't find any drivers on their site, that seems a bit odd....

Honestly Samson products have been a pain in my experience, I've had better luck with Peavey equipment than Samson stuff in the past, it seems like a case of it works or it doesn't as per some of the owners have said in reviews.

Did you update your machine recently? Sometimes Windows Update throws in a driver "update" for a device and winds up breaking the driver altogether.

Edit; Do you have Sound Deck installed?

Yes, I upgraded my mobo and cpu and did a fresh install of Windows 7. The mic worked with this new setup, but suddenly it doesn't want to anymore. Just tried it with 3 different USB cables on my computer and on my brother's computer and everytime I just get the message (loosely translated) about a malfunctioning USB device, which cannot be recognized.

I haven't got Sound Deck.

Edit: What a time for the mic to **** its pants. My H100i and the god-awful Corsair Link have been driving me crazy lately (I just ordered a new air cooler, because I don't have the mental strenght to fight with the thing a second longer). And now 70 euro microphone is giving me a headache.

Also forgot to mention, but I also sent an email to Samson about the thing. I just want to know if they happen to have a solution to it. If they suggest RMAing it, I'll probably just ask from the store if they could take it back and refund the price for me. And then I'll suck it up and buy something-not-from-Samson, especially if it's like how you said that it's problematic brand.

Edit(again): I noticed you said it's problematic with Windows 7, so I will try it on a Windows 8 laptop if that would have any affect.

Wow! 70 Euros? It sells for $49.99 in the states... Must be VAT markup?

Well Sound Deck is their proprietary sound suite so maybe give that a try? Here is a direct download link. http://www.samsontech.com/site_media/support/manuals/SamsonUSBAudioBasic.exe

I did a run-through of the program and it does install USB audio drivers so it might help

If that doesn't work it might have damage to the usb port (if it's mini USB there is a fair chance of that)

It did install some drivers, but I'm still getting the malfunctioned USB device error message when plugging it in. Couldn't get to Windows 8 to see if it works on that, so don't have confirmation on that. I'm leaning towards broken mic/mini usb port, but I'm gonna have to be really unlucky for it to break by just sitting on my table when I haven't used it.

Samson also replied to me pretty fast (it's almost midnight here, so I guess U.S. has working hours right now) and they suggested me to unplug it and uninstall the driver etc, but that doesn't seem to have any effect. They added that if it's not helping, the mic might need to be repaired and asked me if I'm located in the U.S. As far as I know, Samson has all their business in America, so it would cost me an arm and a leg to ship this thing there. I already bought it from Germany, because local stores asked 80 euros for it and not even including postal fees. And yeah, the VAT rates are pretty hefty here in Europe. Especially here in Finland, where we have our VAT sitting comfortably at ball-wrenching 24% for general goods (and it's not even as high as other nordic countries except they have better income levels so it might not feel as bad there).

But yeah, I'm gonna go ahead and contact the German store (fortunately it's a very well known and respected audio equipment store and they even offer service in Finnish) and ask them about the problem and what would be the way to go. Atleast this thing has a 3 year warranty, so I'm not completely screwed yet.

Thanks for your help man!

Had the same problem. Researched it a bit and the problem was about Mic not being able to send it's device ID to windows, so windows blocks it or something like that. Had something to do USB descriptor that's a new feature in Windows 7 and 8 that's causing the problems. Basically no fix since there is no drivers, ask for a refund.

Thanks for the info. Is the feature something that just came out or just something that either causes problems or doesn't? Quite odd for the thing to work flawlessly and then decide it won't work on anything anymore. I wish I had something other than Windows to test it with, but I don't.

I contacted the store and they asked me to send it to them (for free which is good), so they can take a look. If they claim that it works fine, I'll ask for a refund for uncombatible device with false support advertisement. Or if they think the mic is broken and send me a replacement, I will give the mic another chance. But if it still doesn't work, I'll ask a refund and make sure that I won't touch Samson's or any other manufacturer's driverless equipment.

That Windows feature has been there since the release I'm guessing. I had my troubles with Samson Meteor last year in July. Asked for a refund and got the AT2020. Doesn't have drivers as well but works like charm, better quality as well. I suggest you ask for a refund and get another mic.

Thanks for your advice. I'm sending the mic back back tomorrow and have to see what they will say about it. I asked them to refund me the original cost unless they find a physical defect with the device. It'll probably be a a week or two before I hear anything regarding the microphone, so I think I'll just have to do with my ModMic until I get a new one. I looked at the AT2020 yesterday and thought it looks promising, wasn't sure about the driverless part though. Have to look at another mic when I get everything sorted out with the Meteor Mic. Sometimes I hate computers and all the crap you gotta deal with the peripherals.. stun.gif

Hey Everyone!

I had the exact same issue and just replaced the USB cord and everything worked perfectly after that. I think the issue may be that they ship the mic with a cheap usb cord.

Hopefully this solves a lot of your problems because otherwise I think this Mic is great!
