I hear default is 4K and its the best option to go with. How do I go with 4K?
(Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit on unformatted SSD (840 Pro 128GB with 10GB Offset)

Thank you.

Thank you.

4K is the default so if you want 4K then just install Windows normally, otherwise you will have to format the drive with all the attributes before installing Windows on it.

You can do it all within the Windows installation but note you have to go into command prompt and do it through Diskpart. If I remember correctly you click on Repair Windows when installing Windows and will have the option to go into command prompt there.

I just installed windows normally without changing any advanced settings. Is this 4K?

Thank you.

That program won't tell you allocation size, but it will be 4k by default.

If you want to confirm go into CMD with admin right -> diskpart -> list volume -> select volume (number of the windows volume) -> filesystems and under Allocation Unit Size is the set setting.

This is great, thank you!

Which allocation size is optimal for the least CPU overhead? Does the number in AS SSD matter at all?

+1 Thanks!

Edit: How do I disable Intel link management power state without installing the IRST UI?

As far as I know allocation size will not make much difference for a single drive to the point where cpu overhead will be a issue. Allocation size is basically the minimum space a file will occupy. If you have set 4k then files smaller than 4kb will still occupy a space of 4kb because of the allocation size. You can easily see that space can be wasted so allocation size is used more as a fine tuning tool to optimize available space or performance. This really comes into play with RAID systems and a hardware RAID controller is best suited for those complex RAID levels as the cpu overhead could be a issue then.

For disabling power state check this out: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/292971-pcie-link-state-power-management-turn-off-windows.html

A couple days ago I tried installing Windows 8.1 on a pre-formatted partition with 8kB cluster size, and ended up having problems with hibernation and the fast startup Windows feature. Apparently, as I found out later, it's a known issue. I would stick with the default 4kB cluster size, at least for the OS partition.
