Been using Copperhead for years, now what?

Hi, so my Razer Copperhead is really messed up now and I definitely need a new mouse. I've been using this thing since.......I don't know 2006 maybe, and heavily too.

I feel like I hate everything just by looking at them and reading about them. The worst part is that I've gotten VERY used to the way I use my Copperhead mouse, and I don't see anything I like to replace it. You see, I use my pinky finger to press a button that I have macro'd to CTRL+W to close tabs and windows right away. I have gotten extremely used to this simple little macro over the years, losing it would really bum me out. I hate using other peoples computers because I don't get to have that macro on my pinky.

Now what? I don't know what to get. I guess I could use anything that has an extra button I can macro, but....my pinky! I'm so used to it! The placement of the side buttons on the Copperhead, and the rubber grips.......I don't know if I should say they are just perfect, or if I just feel that way because I got so used to it. I have completely adapted myself to this freaking thing.

I might be looking to stick to an ambidextrous claw-like grip, but I might be open to something different. I don't really know. At this point I think I'm most interested in having a mouse with a button I can macro and easily use for CTRL+W. I know how stupid and picky that sounds, but I'm telling you I am really used to using that.

Can someone suggest a mouse? I'm looking for a programmable button; preferably one I can hit with my pinky. I'm also looking for a sturdy clicky scroll wheel that never misses or messes, none of that that smooth/free-scrolling and/or mushy feeling stuff. I play a lot of everything, but mostly FPS games. I don't know much about tracking, considering I've used very few mice in my time. If it's as good or better than my Copperhead though, I'm sure I'd be good with it. Oh and I definitely want something wired.

Regardless of all that, I am interested to hear what mice long-time Copperhead users wound up using.

I would really appreciate some suggestions. I feel like my head is going to explode after looking at and reading about so many mice. I thought I was dead set on getting a Zowie FK1, but then I heard you can't use all 4 side buttons. Now I'm back to being pissed off and looking at mice again.

PS. My main mice over so many years have been an Intellimouse, MX510, and the Copperhead. I've barely used anything else.

Once you get used to the krait/diamondback/copperhead shape it's hard to go away from it in my experience. You can just look at the usual places for used ones. Sealed brand new ones will pop up a couple times a year.

Eventually worked out for me, but had to endure some mice I ended up hating while stocking up.

Seriously, what happened to mice like these? Seems to me it used to be the norm that mice don't have fat butts, but now that that manufacturers started getting all clever with their ideas of ergonomics, you're obligated to operate unwieldy bricks.

I understand your frustration with the current offerings. I resort to playing Quake with an ordinary office mouse just because I don't want to keep buying and returning mice I know I won't like.

As for the Avior, it's possible you won't like it's rear end coming from a Copperhead. If you find it at all possible to live without the pinky button, I suggest trying the G100s instead. You'll spend considerably less money as well.

Thanks guys,

The Mionix Avior 7000 is actually one of the few I narrowed down to, but I heard a lot of complaints about the side button placement and how easily it is to accidentally hit them. I wonder if I can find a local store with this thing. Has anybody used both the Copperhead and the AVIOR 7000 and might have an opinion about the buttons? The Copperhead is really good about it, the rubber grip is prominent and the buttons hardly protrude at all. The Mionix AVIOR 7000 side buttons seem to stick out too much from the pictures; there is no such grip or anything to grab but the body itself, which makes the buttons look like they are in the way. It really does look too easy to accidentally push those buttons.

I would like to just stop thinking about this and get another Copperhead, but $200 is ridiculous and I'm not seeing them anywhere. I'm not too happy about the scroll wheel on the Copperhead anyway. Not sure if it wore out or it was always this mushy and inconsistent.

Yea I feel like an awful lot of mice now are either 'ergonomic' looking or just ........ abstract looking. No idea how they feel though, I haven't really tried any.

I'm digging the price on the G100s, nice. I might go for that anyway to replace my screwy MX510 on my secondary system. I'm going to look into that.

On the pinky button thing,

We use a scroll wheel to scroll up and down pages because it's annoying and slow to click and drag the bar, right? We use forward and back thumb buttons because it's annoying and slow to click the forward and back buttons on the computer, right? I use an extra button to close tabs/windows because I find it annoying and slow to click the X buttons to do so. The fact that I use my pinky is just because that's the only option I have and it works very well with the Copperhead; the pinky just sits next to the button doing nothing anyway. I might just get one of those 'mmo' type mice and use one of those extra thumb buttons to do this, if I have too much trouble getting a good pinky button.

Frankly, I'm surprised it's just me. I don't know or see anybody else that does this. They always click the freaking X. I think clicking the X is an outdated waste of time. Let's see if manufacturers ever agree with that and introduce a new button just for this.

Since I also have a Wacom tablet with touch, I swipe up with 3 fingers of left hand to close which I've set to ctrl-w. Without a tablet I'd just hit ctrl-w on the keyboard.

It's always hard to let go of stuff you got used to, but objectively speaking, closing tabs or windows doesn't happen nearly as often as scrolling. There is no way I would treat myself to an inferior mouse just because it happens to have a button on the right side I can use for this.

Maybe you could use the middle mouse button for this? If it absolutely has to be on the mouse.

That would be an idea, but I use the middle mouse button to open links in new tabs. I do this all the time.

I actually have the same ctrl+w macro on one of my keyboard's 'g keys'. 18 extra programmable buttons, and that's all I did with them. But yeah oftentimes I just don't have my other hand on the keyboard, maybe reclining to the side, and I got so used to just doing it with the mouse.

So I'm back to looking for a mouse.

I wound up buying a Mionix Avior 7000 and a Logitech G100s (for my other computer). The G100s price was awesome and the mouse works pretty good. Only problem with the G100s is the cable. Very...........foldy and stiff......for lack of better words. Also found that the cable kinda went down as it exits the mouse and this caused some awful friction and kinda pushed the mouse up. That either went away or I got used to it.

Thanks Erecshyrinol for suggesting it. That thing was less than $20 and outlasted the Mionix mouse. It's perfect for my secondary computer, but It's been my primary mouse for a few months now.

The Mionix Avior 7000...... what a piece of ****. Scroll wheel broke around the 4 month mark. Couldn't use middle mouse button (use it all the time).

Originally was going to get the Mionix replaced, but they offered a refund; that was very cool of them. I have no confidence in their products so I took that refund. BTW, they tried to get me to ship it to Sweden, ridiculous shipping, but when I asked for a US address they gave me one. That was cool of them as well, but I feel sorry for all the people that wound up paying for shipping to Sweden.

Other than having a ****ty scroll wheel, it was a decent mouse. I got used to the shape and it moves nicely. The side buttons did in fact stick out too much and were accidentally pressed many times on a daily basis. NEVER got used to that, couldn't avoid accidentally hitting the right side-button closest to me, but it didn't do anything so at least there's that. The front right-side button worked very well as my Ctrl+W pinky button. The usb cable was awesome, and the rubber coating on the mouse was very nice.

Mionix has killed my side pinky dreams and now I'm forced to use the DPI switch on my G100s as Ctrl+W.

At this point, I'm looking for a mouse with at least one extra programmable button that is comfortably reached for a macro I use very often. I would prefer a braided cable. I want either claw or finger tip grip. Otherwise, as long as it's not a piece of **** that breaks like a Mionix mouse, I think I'll be happy.

PS I'm especially pissed off because I did the massdrop thing (for the first and last time) to buy the Mionix mouse. So I waited an awfully long time for that disappointment.

That's overpriced. Really awful cosmetic condition for that price.

Sellers of CH/DB's really need to take pictures of the inside with the button plungers showing. A lot of the used mice contain repaired button plungers with elmers glue.

Though it's doubtful that will happen because that right there tells you the amount of use it got and what kind of person owned it.

.......

Amusingly when I last posted in this thread I thought I'd switch from the CH/DB, ahhh how things change.

What abou the Razer Diamondbackt:
http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-diamondback
Very similar to the Copperhead. it has 2 buttons on the side next to the thumb and 2 more on the other side next to the pinky. is that what you're looking for?

Also the Razer Taipan
http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-taipan

Plus the Razer Orochi is wireless/wired and smaller in size with 2 buttons on both sides as well
http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-orochi

Oh and the Razer Ouroboros which is customizable to different grips and has mirrored buttons on both sides.
http://www.razerzone.com/gaming-mice/razer-ouroboros

I know what others say about Razer products, but having multiple Razer keyboards, headsets, mice and keypads and controllers, I have not experienced the negative reviews others have posted throughout the years. 3 nagas (2 2014 versions) , 3 swtor nagas, 2 swtor keyboards, 1 deathstalker ultimate keyboard, 3 swtor headsets, 3 orbweavers (1 is the stealth version), 1 anansi keyboard, 1 blackwidow TE keyboard. the deathstalker ultimate, orbweaver stealth, naga 2014 and swtor headset are on my primary rig and are under heavy use when im not deployed. when I go on deployments the blackwidow TE, a 2nd naga 2014, orbweaver, and 2nd swtor headset travel with me and get used often. just not near as much as when im home I often put in 8-13 hour gaming sessions while the wife is at work.

the mice, keypads, keyboards and headsets have never let me down. hopefully out of those 4 mice, one of them is a good match for you. even though there is a lot of hate for Razer, I've never had an issue.

Edit:
oh and the synapse software has improved over the years. its still there but it doesn't crash or have the profile change issues it did in the past (years ago)
rolleyes.gif

EDIT 2:
one thing I do recommend with how synapse works with its cloud. is to go OFFLINE once you set up a profile. I have 1 issue now (which I can fix with a different account) but since I have multiple profiles they are in the cloud. when im online these profiles load up and do not have profile names. about once a month I check for synapse updates. it will download all these unwanted profiles. I go OFFLINE and manually delete these unnamed profiles from the directories themselves. synapse wont delete them.

SHORT VERSION:

1/ Disconect RAZER SYNAPSE

2/ GO TO :
C:\ProgramData\Razer\Synapse\Accounts\[Random Name]\Devices\[Your Device Name]\Profiles

3/ Open everyfile one by one and search for;

4/ if a files doesnt have this lane, you can remove the file.

LONG VERSION:

here is how to delete unwanted synapse profiles:

first log out of synapse. (go OFFLINE) and then CLOSE synapse.

now go to these 2 directories. change C: to wherever synapse is installed. it never hurts to backup these 2 directories if something goes amiss

C:\programdata\Razer\Synapse\Devices\RAZER PRODUCT\Profiles <--- offline LOCAL profiles (these are only on this computer)

C:\programdata\Razer\Synapse\Accounts\AM_xxxxxxxx\Devices\RAZER PRODUCT\Profiles <----cloud profiles and takes priority

RAZER PRODUCT <---- replace with your mouse, keyboard, keypad, headset or whatever
AM_xxxxxxxx <--- The xxxxxxx is Your account ID

to find what profiles you want to keep, Right Click on each profile and open with Wordpad. scroll to the bottom and it will have or something similar. (I don't have my laptop with me at work today). this is usually towards the bottom of that file. if it is empty or not there at al, it is safe to delete this profile. it will still be on the synapse cloud but will not show up on the synapse profile listing for that device.

look for the profiles you want to keep. save them and delete the others or rename them.

now you can OPEN synapse and only those profiles in the account folder should be displayed. you'll notice you are still OFFLINE. this is ok. it will not hit the cloud and download those unwanted profiles. but when you want to update synapse you will have to login and go online. it will download the cloud profiles and youll have to perform these manual edits/deletions again.

when I get to my laptop ill update this post with better info with screeenshots. ill even make a new thread if there isn't already.

or if you want. you can create a new account and have the cloud save only the profiles you want to keep. I haven't done this yet since this is a quick process and I only have 2 naga profiles I use/save. which I backed up to my SAVEME profile folder. I just delete all the profiels and copy and paste the saved ones over.
C:\programdata\Razer\Synapse\Devices\RAZER PRODUCT\Profiles <--- offline LOCAL profiles (these are only on this computer)
the above profile directory is local only and does not get updated by the cloud. you shouldn't need to mess with those files. synapse will always use the ACCOUNT directory for device profiles.
EDIT 3:
http://www.overclock.net/t/1320903/razer-synapse-2-0-offline-saved-settings-and-login-for-offline-pcs
this is handy if you have a profile that was never in synapse. it will convert them and save them. but if that conversion process doesn't work, you can manually import it. I had to do this to one of the older keyboards. worked without issues

created a thread with this guide and a few edits:
