Try different ram profiles until you find the one it likes.

OK, updated the UEFI/BIOS to the current version, disabled my XMP profile for the G.Skill Sniper 14900 2x8GB RAM, then tried staying away from that 20 multi and upping the FSB, as cssorkinman suggested. This is what my UEFI - Overclocking menu looks like currently:

Booted into Windows, fired up CPU-z, and its sitting stable (for now) at 3960mhz, locked with no turbo. The voltage is much lower, at 1.248 using the 18x multi and a 215fsb.

I did complete a run of Valley, and ... YES !!! ... that's back to normal. The oddity I mentioned last night about the HUGE dip in score (from 1900 to 550 !!) was in fact caused by manipulating the multi from within Windows, causing Aero to crash. It scored 1891, right around where the 6300 did at 4.5ghz.

Ohh, and the 6300 now lives in my HTPC, replacing an X4 820. Talk about easy peasy ... no UEFI, just a good old fashioned BIOS, and I just swapped the chip, reapplied thermal paste and left it alone at stock. No need to push it when it does nothing but encode and transcode DVDs.

I run my 8310 at 4.4 24/7 and up to 4.6 stable

There is no reason your 8300 won't do 4.4 at 1.425 or less true volts. Since no llc what about nb volts? At 4.4 mine is either 1.2 or 1.25
post #314 of 326
CravinR1,how do you propose I get to 4.4 on this board ? I know a 20x multi seems to make it fail immediately. I got it into Windows at 19.5 and it soon tossed a BSOD at me. Note that this is with voltage set to AUTO, so I admit to being not sure if the board scales up the voltage as the multi and/or FSB go up, but it doesn't appear to be raising it, as witnessed by my 1.248 as it is at 3960. I'm just not sure how to go at it after losing the last two rounds of this fight. I claim this round today as a small victory, but I'm just uncertain how to take another step safely without screwing up the progress that I've made.

If it were me I'd set CPU volts to 1.5-1.55 (in AMD parameter) and make sure it's maxing out at 1.4x in prime 95 using hwinfo

Looks like 1.248

@CravinR1 - YOWZA !! You don't mess around, do ya ?? 1.5+ is against my better judgment. To be honest, I'd like to keep it under 1.45 if at all possible. My cooling just isn't up to snuff, with a CoolerMaster Hyper 212+ being tasked with handling temps. I'm kicking around several cooling additions, including a second 120mm fan used in a pull config, but I'm reading that doesn't help out noticeably. Next step was to look at buying two RAM coolers with dual 50mm fans (G.SKILL FTB-3500C5-D look mighty nice, and match the red and black on the board), and attempt to secure them to the 970 Gaming heatsinks.

I don't think this board will droop that badly. But he needs to know what the VID is of the chip in order to figure out the appropriate offset voltage in bios. I would think an offset of +.150 would get him to 1.4 volts and he should be good for 4.4ghz , based on where he is now.

EDIT: try that as an offset voltage - set fsb at 200, 22 x multi.
SS of your cpu voltage in bios please?
