msi gtx 970 gaming voltage throttling at 65 deg.

Hi all. Sorry if this has already been discussed but did not find it when searching. This card drops voltage and core clocks slightly when temps hit above 65 C. Best I can tell, this happens regardless of power limit and is normal for the MSI 900 series.

I can circumvent by running higher fan speeds but because of noise would like to adjust bios to throttle only at a higher temp, 70 or 75 C would allow for stock fan profile and noise. Seems like this temp would be safe, not sure why the aggressive 65 C is implemented in the first place.

Any suggestions for how to mod bios to do this? I really don't need higher voltage or power limit to run stable at 1550 as long as the voltage does not throttle at 65 C so really looking for somewhere to adjust this temp limit issue.

Thanks for whatever you can share.

AFAIK, there nothing to adjust for that temp limiter, only the main ones .
What I do is have fan curve aggressive so it never goes above 65c, around 65-70% fan speed , this also keeps VRM running cooler as they get a little on hot side with stock fan curve .

Bummer we can't adjust on bios. I tried an aggressive fan profile but really Like the card quiet. Think I will have to downclock it so can run stable at the throttled voltage. Hoping the voltage switching itself does not cause instabilities otherwise gonna have to really down clock. Will see how much I want to lose in performance for quietness

you sure it is throttling voltage, for me it just drops clock down 13mhz or so , are you raising stock voltage

these cards have TDP limit ,that might be what your hitting too , you can set MSI AB to monitor temp limit and power limit so you know which it is , temp limit won't show up for the 68c point though .

Not 100% positive but pretty sure it is voltage throttling. Can run valley at 1550.8 Mhz on core at my stock 1.218v, with no voltage adjusment in AB. This is stable when fans are set at 100% However, using default fan profile, when temps hit too high ( above 65 C), but but still below 70 c, it throttles to 1537.7 Mhz and 1.193 V. I have power-limit set in AB to 110% and power never goes above 100% and is usually below 90%. It will sometimes crash the drivers in this scenario using the default fan profile because the voltage has been also throttled down.

I have seen this temperature limit mentioned in a few other posts." there also a temp throttle down clock at 65c"

Wonder if other cards besides MSI have this, thinking maybe it is inherent to gpu boost 2.0 or something.

Regardless, thanks for the help.

I have a gigabyte G1 GTX 970 and my card throttles too. Will go from a stable clock at 1.24mV and then when the temp rises it'll drop the voltage to 1.21mV which will make it unstable.

If of interest to anyone, given the voltage throttling at 65 C, I had to back off the clocks from the bleeding edge. Is stable at 1.218V, core 1534 & when throttled to 1.193V, 1521 core. Tested with 3 hours of Valley and 3 hours of my fav game; BFBC2. Not too much drop off from the 100% fan values.

Quite pleased with this card, plenty of gpu power to have BFBC2 run at max settings with a constant 120 fps under vsync with light-boost enabled for blur-free gaming fun.

The clock (-13MHz) and voltage throttling at 65°C and 75°C is normal behavior of Nvidia Boost 2.0

Is it stupid = YES, do we hate it = YES!!!, will Nvidia do something about it = most probably not

The only thing you can do is to keep the GPU below 65°C. Because of this I bought a AIO (all in one) watercooler.

I just wanted to comment, there is a way smile.gif A custom BIOS can manipulate the throttling behavior. Heat is also only 1 of the 3 main reasons throttling can occur. Insufficient voltage and insufficient power can also throttle the GPU which is where the custom BIOS can increase voltage and power limits. tongue.gif

@ Laitan

I don't want to edit the BIOS. I have bought a NZXT Kraken X31 AIO Watercooling. With that the card will stay below 65°C. I will use it on the GTX 980 Ti reference card and after that I will use it on the next card. So I never have to wait for expensive custom designs and over time the AIO Watercooler will amortize itself.
