I picked one up mainly because my OG Nexus 7 is dying and I wanted something smaller and more portable anyway. I don't particularly care about the phone aspect. That said, as someone who isn't keyed into the phone world, what would I need to do to get a carrier on one of these?

I like to think of HSPA+ as 3.5G. In my area my HSPA+ is usually around 10mb down and 2mb up, which is way better than my old 3G only service years ago.
Got a white one for my mom who was using my old ORIGINAL Galaxy Vibrant. Having used Tmobile "3g" in the past and LTE now yes I have peaked at 60mb/s down and 22up but even on their "3g" a few years ago 7-12 down was pretty common which is usable for most people.
Good deal but also sad that my old Note 2 which my brother now has has a better CPU and more ram and more storage etc... I was shocked at 1gb ram and almost did not buy it for that, but I doubt my mom has 10 apps and 100-200 tabs in chrome open at once like I do LOL

1GB of RAM honestly isn't that terrible. I got mine today and have been messing around with it. It's handled everything I've thrown at it perfectly fine. Netflix, Hulu, various games, Steam, Twitter, etc... Everything runs just fine. That said, I do clear out my recent apps relatively often so I never have a crapload of stuff running at once. Maybe 5-10 things.
It's so much faster/snappier than my OG Nexus 7, which is basically what I was replacing (yes, I know that's a tablet and this is a phone). I do realize that has to do with Asus using cheap storage that has degraded over time, but still, it's a nice little device, especially for $150.
My wife's came in the mail today and wow is this thing solid. I'm very impressed with the feel, size, and aesthetics of this phone. The white is beautiful. I opened it up and powered it on once just to check for the 5.0 update but it didn't have it yet. I'll check again next week before I wrap it.
Man, I can't believe the Moto X doesn't have SD slot but this budget $150 Moto G does. I was so impressed with this phone that I started looking at the Moto X for my work phone until I find out it doesn't have an SD card slot and only 16GB built in storage. What's wrong with them!? Is it really not worth the extra $5 manufacturing to accommodate for external storage??
