Will my i5 3570k@4.2Ghz bottleneck sli gtx 980?

Hello i currently have:

Motherboard: Sabretooth z77
Cpu: i5 3570k watercooled overclocked to 4.2Ghz
Watecooling: corsair h100i
Ram: kingston hyperx beast 16gb overclocked to 1867Mhz
Gpu: 2x evga gtx 680 4gb classified running in sli
Psu: xfx pro 1250w
ssd: samsung 840 evo 500gb for windows
harddrive: seagate barracuda 3tb
Monitor: Asus rog swift pg278q 1440p 140hz g-sync

I want to upgrade to sli gtx 980s to take advantage of 1440p and 144hz. Do i have to upgrade my motherboard and cpu or will it work just fine and not bottleneck?
It would save me lots of money if the cpu was good enough.

TBH it depends on the game, I will tell you for sure, it will bottleneck in games like BF4 siege of shanghai 64 players.

It would save me lots of money if the cpu was good enough.

There really isn't a CPU to upgrade to anyway even if it was a bottleneck.

You can hardly call a 4670K an "upgrade" when it comes to purely gaming. You'd get maybe like 5% boost at the same clocks.. I'd overclock your i5 a bit more, 4.2GHz is very mild.

Maybe go up to 4.5~4.7GHz, but like what others have said, there isn't any real upgrade to what you have.

Thanx for the replies! I was afraid the cpu would be holding the 980s back.
Yes i know its a light overclock, it was my first cpu overclocking so i was being careful.
I will try to overclock it to at least 4.5 Ghz
post #8 of 37
if I had sli 980s I would want an i7 4790k or 5820k

give them no chance of holding back tongue.gif

Thats what i was thinking at first but my wallet doesnt agree with me...

Upgrading to those would probably help boost your minimum FPS, but your average would be fairly similar. Not worth the $$$ unless you're rich. tongue.gif
