old geforce 8 series help

Thread Starter
Mods, I did not know which section/forum to put this in, please move if necessary. I didnt see a specific thread/forum about folding, just this team section

Fired up an old computer today. Pentium D 925 OC'd to 3.5 crunching away happily at 990PPD or so.

Has a PNY 8500GT 512MB DDR2 attached for monitor output.

Wondering what I need to do to get this old card folding? core chip is a G86.

I dont really care if its worth even as low as 500PPD, every little bit helps. thumb.gif

Cannot overclock CPU any more, its hit a thermal wall at 60*C since the only heatsink I found in my pile is from a Celeron 440 ran at 2GHz default

Cannot get a newer GPU, money is stupid tight right now. mad.gif

Thanks in advance guys and gals thumb.gifthumb.gif

I expected as much. Glimmer of hope to get some use out of old hardware.

Might I ask where this info is stated? Thanks.

sure, this is a post from last saturday.

I was thinking an Nvidia 8400 GS or something...? Budget card yes but I'm sure it would do something and at about 17 watts max it's not going to cost a fortune to leave on 24/7. Any better suggestions welcomed though as I'm sure the 8400 GS isn't even on the list of compatible GPU's anymore.

G80 class NV GPUs are no longer supported for folding. You would need a Fermi class (4xx series or above) GPU. Sorry, SVideo is very rare in that class of GPU. But you can go from a more common VGA to SVideo via adapter. But to buy new, it will be hard to find anything less than a low end 6xx or 7xx card, which is better, and not much more $.
