290x lightning is by far the most premium 290 (x) card in terns of cooling, PCB setup, overclocking etc (with the vaporx not far behind).

HOWEVER, it's expensive for the performance. The best middle ground for performance and price is probably a 290 Trix (you could probably get two of those too if you liked). I'm not a fan of the Asus cards cooling, they attached an older design unoptimally and it performs inefficiently. The VRMs also get very hot in the Asus cards.

Oh, and btw, the 290 is only a few % slower than a 290x clock for clock and yet is a lot cheaper.

It certainly is. But the cost is prohibitive. Put it up against a 290 Trix and you get a card that performs 85-90% as well for what, half the price?

It depends on what you want out of yours I suppose though.

Sooo. Clock for clock the 290x is only 3-5% (and 5 is pushing it) faster than a 290. And a 290 Trix is currently 280 dollars after a 20 dollar rebate from Newegg. And a Lightning is 390 dollars. OK so not almost twice the price

(I thought they were 500 bucks).

It comes down to performance and cost I supose. THE lightning will be slightly better than the Trix in every way...but only slightly. I suppose it's up to the consumer if that is worth it.

2x 290...

The 290x Lightning is a beast but tbh I read the 290x Lightning thread once in a while and the overclocks don't impress me and people on air seem to get the same result as any other 290 (between 1100-1200 using reasonable voltage on average).

EDIT: Nvm it seems 290x Lightning clocks better than most 290/x.

A 290X that can oc to 1250 core will be very hard for a 290 to catch. these lightnings are meant for benchers but will also be great for games 'cause there is a better chance of oc'ing higher.

i own a 290 that can bench to 1300.

What are you on about? You're the one who mentioned overclocking, I merely pointed out how the 290 Trix can overclock really well too. I've already conceded that the 290x light ning is without a doubt the best 290 (x) card.

But a 290 Trix is not far behind in performance clock for clock ~5% and the average overclock of a Lightning is not muxh higher than the average overclock of a Trix 290 (I would say 1150 vs 1200).
