Image looks too soft, no sharpness to them

So my buddy just recently built a new gaming PC and after getting it all up and running he's finding both his monitor and tv are displaying the images too soft with little to no sharpness. The TV he hook's up via HDMI and his monitor he uses a DVI to VGA adapter on the GPU. He's running a 4th gen i5 on a z97 motherboard, 16 gigs of ram with 2 660's in SLi. All pretty standard stuff which is why I can't quite figure out what's going on. All the settings appear to be fine. Day Z won't give him the option to run the game at 1080P either, bumps him down to 1600 or something like that. Even playing movie's the image look's soft. He's tested both GPU's by themselves same result. Anyone got any ideas? Any help or input would be appreciated.

What make is the TV?

Use only the display port on the cards. If you don't have them, run the hdmi. Don't use dvi.

That will solve your problem.

Sorry for the late responses. My buddy ended up figuring out his problem. It was some setting in the control panel apparently.
