Hello friends, I just purchased the G3258 combo from Fry's (have to pick it up tomorrow). Included is an MSI Z87 G41 motherboard. I currently have an i3 2130 and was wondering if there would be any performance differences between an overclocked G3258 and my 2130. I mainly do light Photoshop work (UX design) and play League. Which CPU would be better for such tasks?
First off, LoL is single threaded (mostly), so no need for hyper threading for that.
Secondly, hyper threading gives you a 10-20% performance boost in multi threaded apps. Overclocking the pentium by 20% over i3 clocks would make up for that easily.
Thirdly, I'm not sure about cpu cache size benefits but I have not heard of em being overly big.
Lastly, the G3258 is based on haswell cpu design, so that has a little IPC edge over sandy bridge by itself.
So my vote goes to the G3258 for anything and everything, if you give it some nice clocks. c: If you aren't getting higher FPS (min/max) out of LoL with it, then something else might be wrong.
The hyperthreading on the i3 doesn't give that much more performance boost. You should be able to get at least 4.0GHz out of that Pentium easily. At that point, it is far better than the i3. Another vote for that.
My vote goes to the G3258. Even at stock, the G3258 has better single threaded performance. The only advantage the i3 has would be hyperthreading. I would go for the G3258 and clock it as high as it will go. Single threaded performance is still the king for gaming.
