First Server Project

Thread Starter
Hello all,

I just got out of the army and about to go back to school, I'm wanting to build a server for the roles of file and print server, DHCP, Esxi with muliple vm's for projects. My question is with something like this could I simply just have one 1u rack with the file and print server, and the dhcp and then have another 1u that has the esxi running on it, and then have 2 2u's for storage and the other for back-up purposes?

If there is any good reading material that can relate to client/server please recommend. I havent been able to find much on the topic. Probably just searching it the wrong way.

Thanks

Since you obviously have Internet access, why not:

  1. Let your Internet router handle DHCP
  2. Assign one of the 2Us as a storage server
  3. Install ESXi on the two 1Us and use one of the 2Us as a storage pool for the VMs; you then have a redundant ESXi setup, with shared storage so that you can move VMs between ESXi nodes.
  4. Possibly have the other 2U in a redundant HA storage setup
  5. Use the remaining server for backups.
