Help with PC Build

Thread Starter
Hi all,

Finally joined the forums, been lurking for almost a year or so, and I come to you with a rig question (I am no stranger to rig building, I built a Core 2 Duo system back in '08 and am currently an owner of a MiniITX Haswell i5 (CM Elite 120 case, love that thing) and an Ivy Bridge i5 rig that is currently lobotomized.

So I'm terming this here I need help with as "Project Legacy" as my goal is to build a machine (preferably using parts on hand) that can play both modern (Read as 2014 and *maybe* 2015) games and the classics (late 90s onwards, so X Wing Alliance etc.). This is borne out of my dissatisfaction with the way gaming is going (*cough* origin *cough*) into such a digital format. So the goal is to build a system that is mechanically reliable enough to last a decade or more and that if worst comes to worst, can have cheap replacement parts. I'd like it if I can preserve both my old games on and anything I've got currently (Up to Civ BE). Note that currently playing games from 2011 or so to now is not much of an issue as I have two rigs to handle those.

My next requirement: Ideally I'd like to be able to run both a 64 bit OS and a 32 bit for the sake of some of those games I own that can't be run on 64 Bit OS's (Like XWA).

So I'm kind of wanting to do a multiBoot system maybe running
Win Vista 64 Bit (Firstly I have a softspot for vista, it was installed on my first gaming rig, secondly, I already own a license for the 64 bit Business version)

Win XP 32

and maybe the Steam OS, because reasons

The final requirement is that it needs to have a small footprint. Ideally ITX but mATX is acceptable too and preferably uses components I already have.

What I've got right now:

A lobotomized LGA 775 rig with a Core 2 Duo E6850 and 4 1 GB sticks of DDR 2 600 Mhz ram (approx. that) and an ASUS ATX mobo

An EVGA 9800 GT Superclocked 512 GB DDR3 card from 2008.

Soon an Enermax Whisper 2 535 W PSU

Also a 500 GB Laptop HDD I could repurpose, hooray for 7200 RPM drives. Though I know I am gonna need a *LOT* of storage, stupid steam library

Another thing is I'd kinda like to be able to mess with the clock speed so I can underclock it a bit.
I do happen to have 4 4 GB sticks of DDR3 1600 between my two desktops that I could re-arrange if needbe

Also my budget is extremely low , like between 100 and 150 (I do have most of the necessary stuff already) *maybe* 200 depending on how much I can scrounge up (the life of the college student)

Again, I am looking to try to repurpose what I already have if possible and I need something that will be sturdy and capable of enduring for a long time.

Thank you in advance

In a decade your parts would be cheap as hell. Within 4-5 years your PC will require a new GPU if you want to play game at high settings. It all depends on your budget aswell. The current system you have wont be able to play this gen games. If you want to have a good and reliable PC that could last a decade without having issues only GPU power then you need to by a new system

Get a x64 OS thats a must even if you want to play games. You can run both if you have x64

WIth that budget get yourself a decent graphics card for your current system if you want to play games.
