Nvidia 960 For Folding

Thread Starter

Hey guys,

So in the new year I will be looking to purchase 6x GPU for folding, I obviously want to keep power costs low and from the looks on this the 750Ti is a great choice, as well as the fact that it is cheap to pick up. I just wanted to consult the folding Guru's :)

Cheers guys,

E

Why not go for one 980 and fold in Linux - easy 400+K PPD for less than 200W (my system draw is 230 with monitor).
A 970 in Linux will put out 300+K PPD.

I agree, if you have the money to spend up front that would be a much better option. My 2 750ti's and 2500k pull around 165w folding (just gpu folding), if you can justify a 980 or 970 for folding it would also put out double the ppd at around the same wattage. I only get around 150k ppd IF I get all core 17s, lately its been a mix of 17 and 18. The latter kill my ppd on 750ti's. There is always the option of waiting for the 960 as well. I bet those are going to be nice folders. I am far from a folding Guru though so....

Money is more of an issue. Currently I have other projects that kind of require the bulk of my money right now, so I was looking for options that are not too expensive, considering also that I am going with 6 of the GPU I decide.

What CPU will be hosting the new GPUs?
Nvidia folding right now takes quite a bit of CPU overhead for each GPU. 6 x 750ti's may require a pretty powerful CPU to get the most out of them and fully utilized.
Whereas AMD usually has very little reliance on the CPU unless it's check-pointing, then the CPU use will spike for a moment. But right now there aren't any power efficient cards for AMD right now that you can substitute the 750ti with.

I have three machines, each machine will have two gpu's in each. The CPU is each machine is an Intel Xeon W3540, not the latest but does fairly well in folding but more than happy sacrifice CPU folding performance for GPU obviously (Not that I have a choice)

Out of interest putting power usage aside, folding wise what card from AMD competes with the 750Ti Folding wise ?

How much are you willing to spend on each GPU?

Ahh okay, don't know why I assumed they would go into one PC. They should be able to run 100% no problem then.

Roughly £100 Each GPU perhaps a tad more. I am not really going for powerhouse as that would cost a fair bit of cash 6x 980's would be rather expensive haha.

No problem and good to hear :)

I am just doing some research to see if AMD has an equivalent card performance wise, granted it will not be as power friendly.

OK Enterprise,
You could buy 2 x 970's for about that price, place it in one unit and run it in Linux - Boom 600K PPD.
6 X 750Ti on three machines - more power needed and you will see only about 450K PPD.

Save the other two units and add GPU's when you have more $$$ biggrin.gif

Another idea: I do not know how much power 7950's use but you may be able to get them for cheap and my 7950 (got it clocked to 1200Mhz) was getting about 140K PPD during the FaT.
