Its not a little bit naughty, its actually criminal. Its false advertising and the ASA is likely going to fine them pretty heavily once its reported enough times to them.
I am cautiously optimistic we will see a Freesync monitor early next year but I am concerned that:
1) I haven't yet seen a game/real time varying frame rate demo of Freesync.
2) The promise of said demo for November came and went without a single word from AMD, like it didn't matter.
3) They haven't yet explained how it actually works. We know in detail long before we got independent reviews of gsync how it would work broadly and shortly after that more details and working monitors. The single spec line change in the specification really doesn't help and AMD saying it works like gsync only better in every way really doesn't help.
4) We don't really have any product announcements. This one from Iiyama is more like an announcement about a future unknown date for a product they haven't made yet. We knew about the gsync manufacturers 9 months before the major models were released, we knew about the SKUs about 6 months before.
I have been using gsync for 6 months now, AMD has been talking about Freesync for a year at this point and I don't think its unreasonable to see something more than the fixed rate low frame rate video demonstrations if they really are intending to release a product within 3 months. I would have expected a lot of product announcements. All I know is that there is something fishy about all this, I think they have been woefully over optimistic on their timelines and the real release date of this technology is some way off yet.
