Even with all those companies on board, 4k is pretty much pointless at this time, IMO. Most cable and sat broadcasts are still 720p... even with having 1080p being around for as long as it has, only a few transmissions are actually 1080i. As a TV format, you'll soon be able to watch a few titles in 4k... in much the same way you can see a few titles in 3D. The infrastructure and bandwidth necessary to make 4K a viable TV just isn't there and gaming consoles probably won't support that for quite some time to come.
As a computer monitor, there isn't a whole lot of hardware that will push that resolution for gaming except for high end enthusiast rigs, which will end up being the real market for these UHD TVs for some time to come. In smaller panels, it's questionable if you really need that kind of dpi. Of course you can see the difference, but is that difference necessary? I guess for some people that would be a yes.
Sure, it'll do great justice for >40" panels definitely and give all the 1080p computer monitor people reason to upgrade. But for <30"? I think it's a gimmick. I have never looked at my 7 year old Dell 3007 WFP-HC and said, I need higher pixel density or lower pixel pitch. Sure my eyes can resolve more static resolution, but they don't really need to and right now the hardware to power that much resolution isn't cheap.
With all the ISP complaining about how Netflix and torrents are using up most of the bandwidth, just wait until streaming 4k and the additional size of torrents impacting this. 4k is premature technology. Sure, Japan and much of Europe is probably ready for this, America isn't.
And... I don't remember people being so ecstatic buying a new tv when 720p was a cheaper alternative to a 1080p TV. 4K is the low-def standard for UHD which is 4k *and* 8k.
So yeah, for PORN, 4k will be absolutely glorious. For everything else... not so much. But it will make for great 40"+ computer monitors.
